Help Save Heart's Auto Repair in Blackstone

Donation protected
Jack Daniel, Jr. was born and raised here in Blackstone, Virginia. That should tell you a lot about the man. His sense of community and morality shine in this business which keeps so many Nottoway County residents’ vehicles “up and running.” Whether you bring a vehicle to Jack’s shop or have him rescue you out on the road when you break down, you know you will experience the man’s honesty, skill, fairness, and good “heart.” Heart’s Auto Repair has been easy to find on Church Street in Blackstone, VA for 7 years now.

So what’s the problem?  Well, did you ever try to wrestle with a transmission wanting to fall off its temporary mounting while being repaired? DON’T! Or you may, like Jack, end up with (not one, but…) TWO, left and right, damaged rotator cuffs, needing urgent shoulder surgery. That was about a year ago. You’ll note the sling in the picture below which means hopefully successful surgery has been performed on the right shoulder. Yay! All will be well! Well, not quite… Before surgery he could barely work with either arm, or drive that big ole mobile repair van. So he had to bring on another mechanic. Now, this is not the way Jack does business. For most of his life he has been in automotive repair, and 90% of that time he was the sole mechanic, able in recent times to speedily and efficiently perform enough repairs to bring in $15K per month in billings. That, of course, bought the parts for the repairs, paid the mortgages on building and equipment, paid utilities, and all the expenses involved in being a “sole proprietor.”

Enter George (at right). Hard-working mechanic that he is, and single father of 4 busy little kids (below), HIS livelihood is at stake now too! There is no way a younger, less-experienced worker can pump out the work that Jack could. So Heart’s is floundering with only about $5K in billings per month now. I’m guessing you can begin to see the problem.

The doctors insist that Jack not use that right arm at all until they give the “all clear.” Ever try to repair a car or drive a big beast of a van like you see in this photo--with not even one completely functioning arm?! And as soon as that one is cleared to be used and therapy is in process, then the docs will take the left arm out of commission for the next 90 days! This is a recipe for business disaster! Jack hopes and expects to be able to carry a normal workload by late summer. But, in the meantime, just imagine how great a limitation it is on the business to not be able to generate the funds it requires to keep going.

Jack says, “I am looking at a shortfall, for about 6 months, of $10K per month.  I estimate that I will need an additional $65,000 to just keep running and paying the bills for Heart's Auto Repair through mid-August! I do not want this business to go under! I am fortunate enough, at my age, [Jack is 68] to have the assistance of Medicare and Social Security to carry a reasonable portion of my personal expenses, but this business! I can’t let it go under! People in Blackstone and many of our surrounding towns are counting on me! I have been serving many of them for 7 years here in town. They know they can count on me to get the job done right, and never to be ‘scalped’ by their mechanic. I just don’t know how I can pay my bills, running this far behind, and not knowing exactly when I will have two good, REPAIRED arms.”

We don’t want Jack to have to close his doors and say goodbye, even temporarily. To try to rebuild all the goodwill that he has built in the last seven years… For a man of 68? Willing to work? But to start over?

So we are hoping you can reach out and help Jack with a heartfelt donation to this GoFundMe campaign. Do you have a car, truck, service vehicle? The next time it breaks down (and it will, eventually), or just needs proper, periodic service, we want you to know that an honest, ethical man like Jack is still out there to get the work done for you.

Please reach down and see if you can help. This next 6 months is a make-it-or-break-it moment for Heart's Automotive Repair in Blackstone, VA.  And another HUGE thing you can do-maybe even the BIGGEST!-is to share this link through email to all the inboxes in your contact list, to message friends, family, and neighbors, and to share to all your friends on Facebook.
