Looking Glass Community Outreach (LGCO), formerly known as Looking Glass Community Services (LGCS), is an all-volunteer, registered 501(c)(3) faith based nonprofit serving needy families in the southern Shiawassee County communities of Laingsburg, Shaftsburg, Perry, Morrice, and Bancroft.
We have a family in Perry, with four teenagers, who is in dire need of a helping hand. The father was involved in a work related accident just over a year ago which caused a closed head injury requiring the insertion of 2 metal plates in his skull. As a result he has been unable to work, they lost their car, and the employer, who has admitted being at fault, is refusing to help, and is also fighting the workers comp case in court. It is estimated that this case could take another 6 months to be resolved. In the meantime if the family is late one more time with their rent they will be evicted and will lose their mobile home. Most of the traditional safety net agencies have long since reached their financial limits of support.
LGCO, along with other churches and service groups have been helping this family for several months, but we are just not financially strong enough to help a family for an extended period of time. Therefor we are reaching out to our last resort, you the community. We would like to establish a Go Fund Me page to help this family to be able to stay in their home, by providing their rent and utilities for the next 6 months (or until the court case is settled). Their rent is $460 a month and their utilities average $230 a month. We are also adding $60 a month to help keep minutes on their phone, which is critical in looking for work, plus a few incidentals. This comes to $750 a month, and for 6 months this adds up to our goal of $4,500. Our first phase is to cover the rent for February which is $460
Also, if anyone knows of a reliable used car that this family could use or rent until their case is settled, this would be a tremendous help, especially for the mother who is currently registered through Work First in an attempt to get a job.
