Help Rosa & Nancy Start a New Life in America

I met Rosa and Nancy while I was volunteering in Tijuana, Mexico, in December, 2018. A small delegation from South Florida traveled to Tijuana to offer legal, medical, and mental health services to migrants waiting to apply for asylum at the US/Mexican border. Rosa and Nancy left their home country in October 2018, fleeing violence, persecution and death threats. As a lesbian couple they were not accepted. Rosa was raped by a man who told her “I will make a woman out of you.” She has a four year old as a result of the assault. In early 2018 Rosa  was beaten so badly by a distant family member, that she lost partial sight in her right eye, it took weeks to heal from the physical abuse.  He told her that she deserved it for being lesbian. Rosa was not able to ask for protection from the police, who turn a blind eye and don’t protect members of the LGBTQ community. When gangs starting to demand “protection money” they decided to flee and seek asylum in the United States. After six weeks on the road, they made it and are now living in the US.
