Rest/Noise tours Gordon's "Timber"

Greetings!  My name is Mike Hardin; I'm the founder of Rest/Noise , a performing arts group that revolves around percussion. Collaboration between people of different mediums (theater, electronics, digital media), being an active part of the Boston community, and performing music not usually heard in the Boston music scene is important to us. Rest/Noise takes its name from the quintessential read on 20th-Century music The Rest is Noise  by Alex Ross; this name was gratefully approved by Mr. Ross.

WHAT: This fall we're touring Michael Gordon’s Timber throughout the Greater Boston Area, Providence, and NYC. This tour of Gordon's hour-long, trance-inducing worship of overtones and ghostly sound will start at the Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, MA.  Other performances will take place in Cambridge, Somerville, and Brighton.

WHEN: Starting September 22, 2017 and going through December 2017.

WHERE: The Greater Boston Area, MA; Providence, RI; Warren, RI; New York City, NY

WHY: Timber is an amazing work that celebrates creating something from nothing; beautiful music from simple pieces of wood.  Our mission is to bring enrapturing, percussion-heavy chamber music to the uninitiated masses.

HOW: This project has received partial funding from the Cambridge Arts Council with a Creative Project grant of $3,750.  It has also been backed with a Matched Savings Grant of $1,000 from Assets for Artists. In order to make it, we need your help!

COSTS:
After obtaining the wood needed, the rights to use the score from G. Schirmer, 6 DiMarzio, Inc. contact mics, and 6 AirTurn Bluetooth PED foot pedals (score is not able to be printed), we still need to cover costs like the $2500  cost to rent the Waterworks Museum (Brighton, MA), $300 for The Rockwell (Somerville, MA), $275 for The Music Mansion (Providence, RI) and $650 for the First Church in Cambridge (Cambridge, MA).  This totals an additional $3,450.   The remaining $1,550 will be used for marketing (logo design by Carl Harrison = $300; business cards, t-shirts, social media Boosts= $1,250.)

**The venue costs are our largest cost to this project: help us bring TIMBER to the Greater Boston Area!**

ABOUT TIMBER:
Timber has been hailed as "its own religious experience" (Sarah Garvey, Brooklyn Academy of Music), "bewildering yet comforting" (The Guardian), and possessing "vigor and hypnotic intensity" (New York Times). This work is a smooth blend of beautiful harmonies between fundamentals, overtones, and dark timbres.  You can watch Michael talk about his approach to writing this piece here .

Your support would mean the realization of an almost 1.5 year-long endeavor and the kind of momentum we need to launch into future projects beyond this one.

Warmly,

Mike Hardin
