Help Rebecca Buckland Fight Lymphoma

On May 1st 2019, Rebecca Buckland heard the three words no one ever wants to hear in their life, “You have cancer”

This is a difficult and scary diagnosis for anyone, but at just 23 years of age, and after having undergone emergency brain surgery in December 2018, to say about this news was devastating is an understatement.

In early 2018, Rebecca discovered a passion for the law, and excitedly went into a Police Foundations course at a local college on her way to becoming a police officer.  When she received the news in December that she needed emergency brain surgery, she was just few short weeks away from graduating from her course with honors and distinction.

Rebecca was diagnosed with Pseudo Tumor Cerebri/Hydrocephalus behind her eyes and was losing her vision. After exhaustive tests and specialist appointments, on December 15th, her neurosurgeon Implanted a permanent, programmable shunt into her brain to help drain the fluid that was impacting her vision and causing the headaches.

After being released from the hospital, Rebecca completed her course to graduate as planned with honors and distinction. Rebecca worked from home on assignments and went in and wrote her final exams a couple weeks after her surgery. With the brain surgery behind her, Rebecca was confident the worst thing she would ever have to go through, was now behind her and she would be able to return to work soon and to start working towards applying to police college.  Unfortunately, Rebecca had no idea what was just around the corner.

Sometime in early April, Rebecca discovered a few lumps in her neck and under her left arm, she had an ultrasound and was sent for a biopsy Which led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Rebecca officially started round 1 of chemo on May 17th 2019 and the initial plan is that she will undergo 12 rounds over 24 weeks.

Rebecca has been unable to work and will not return to work until in early 2020, if everything goes according to plan.

Rebecca is living with her mom, and her family is doing everything that they can to support her emotionally and financially. MaryAnne, her mom just opened a business, and has to pay for someone to cover her when she takes Rebecca to her appointments. Rebecca’s inability to support herself is adding to her stress and anxiety which is definitely not helping her condition. Because she was a student for nine months prior to getting sick, she does not unfortunately qualify for any unemployment benefits.

Rebecca has a car payment, car insurance and two student loans in addition to all of the medication, treatments, and associated costs that come along with cancer that are not covered by her limited health benefits. In addition, there may be alternative treatments to explore.

Friends and family, we are asking for help for Rebecca and her family, to ease the stress and financial to allow everyone to focus on Rebecca’s recoveryfrom this terrible disease. Any amount you can spare would be helpful. Thank you in for taking the time to listen and get to know Rebecca’s story.
