As many of you know, my sweet sister is beginning her battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After discovering a lump in her neck back in April and undergoing several tests and biopsies, she received shocking news of cancer in early November. Although she was having strange symptoms and unexplained health issues, we never imagined cancer. In the two weeks since her diagnosis, we have gone from talking about what we are making for dinner and planning for our toddlers to discussing her treatment plan, possible side effects, and many unknowns of this whole process. It is scary and incredibly sad.

Rachel is an amazing mom to Nora, who will be 2 in December, and a loving wife to Cody. They have been married for 3 years and bought their first home in Gorham last year. They have a beautiful life together and will hopefully look back on this battle as a small part of their story.

Although Rachel and I are 8 years apart, we are so close. As her older sister, I wish I could take this for her. Rachel has always been determined and I know she will fight this with everything she has.

The initial shock of the diagnosis has set in and now comes the hard work of fighting this battle. Rachel met with her oncologist this week and will begin chemotherapy just after Thanksgiving. We are thankful to God that her cancer was detected in the early stages and she has been given a very positive prognosis by her oncologist. Throughout the course of her treatment, she will likely experience fatigue, nausea, and hair loss among other side effects. Along with the emotional struggle, they are also facing many appointments, doctor’s bills and medical expenses.

Please consider helping Rachel and Cody through this journey by making a donation on their behalf.

We continue to be overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support we have received. A lot has happened since we last updated here. Two days after we learned that the cancer had spread, Rachel was able to meet with a lymphoma specialist in Boston. He confirmed her stage IV diagnosis but told her that she still has a wonderful prognosis and recommended the best treatment plan available. Rachel receives chemo every two weeks and her treatment will last six months. She will have a PET scan at the end of the month to check on her progress. We ask for prayers as she moves forward and especially as her scan approaches. Thank you all again, our spirits are lifted daily by the continued love and support.

Here is a post from Rachel this morning.

Cody and I continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude for all of the love and support we continue to receive. We can't express the comfort and encouragement that we feel each time someone reaches out, donates, or prays for us. The financial support that we continue to receive is incredible and we thank each and every person who has donated and/or taken the time to organize events for us. Yesterday, we received the results of my pet scan. We learned that the cancer is not in the early stages as we had previously thought. It is in my bones and now considered stage IV. We are thankful that the prognosis for stage IV Hodgkin's is still good and although we don't understand why this is happening, we trust in God and know that He works all things for good. We humbly ask for continued prayers as we settle into our new reality and start treatment tomorrow. Thank you all.

Rachel my sweet girl, I have been meaning to do this for a while! Remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you know, smarter than you think and loved more than you know. Sometimes I clean my kitchen counters and think of you. Praying for you! Peace baby, be strong, and you can do this!
