                     FROM ANOTHER CONCRETE PRODUCTION FACILITY
                                       IN DOWNTOWN BLADENSBURG

·         An Increase in Truck Traffic

·         Air and Water Pollution

·         Risk of Pedestrian Injury and Fatalities

·         Increased Health Risks

Statement

Help the local grassroots community coalition (Port Towns Environmental Action – “PTEA”) contest the Ernest Maier Special Exception and Variance application that proposes to add ANOTHER concrete production facility to its already overcrowded and poorly maintained site in downtown Bladensburg.

What is the Problem?

PTEA is working to ensure that another concrete plant --- there are already 15 air and water polluting facilities in Bladensburg*(UMD/School of Public Health)--- isn’t shoehorned into a property that already contains another plant. There are currently hundreds of diesel truck trips starting and ending in Bladensburg or passing through resulting in high levels of diesel pollution (EPA Region 3: 90 – 95th percentile for NATA Diesel PM). Diesel exhaust contains arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde and nickel. Long terms exposure poses the highest cancer risk of any toxic air contaminants. The area has an NATA cancer risk in the 90 – 95th percentile.

Why do we need support NOW?

Funds for organizing will be used to support the legal efforts to combat the approval of a plan to build an additional facility on the current site. We need funds to support our legal efforts to oppose the plant and materials for outreach and communications both online and printed. Our next hearing is June 19 so we need your support NOW!

The 6,000+ kids in the Port Towns will THANK YOU!

We are a community of schools with more than 6,000 children within a one mile radius. They can’t do anything about the increasing pollution in our community, but WE CAN. Help us clean up and ensure a healthier Port Towns for the kids.
