Help Petey Get to Brave Trails!

Hello Friends and Future Friends!

You probably know me already, but if you don't, lovely to meet you! My name is Petey Gibson. I'm an LA-based comedian, writer, producer, and teacher. I train with the esteemed Groundlings improv school, teach and perform in local public schools through the Story Pirates, and volunteer and mentor through the Lifeworks program at the LA LGBT Center. BUT none of these are my favorite thing that I do. My favorite thing that I do is volunteer at Camp Brave Trails.

Brave Trails is a leadership camp for LGBTQ youth, which, as you can imagine, is an incredibly thrilling concept to me. It fosters the types of skills and relationships needed to kick serious butt in the 21st century. Brave Trails is also just a plain-ol-fun camp, with things like NATURE and ART and HOPEFULLY SMORES. And finally but not least, it is an immersive and safe experience for LGBTQ teens to be themselves and be amongst other youth like them. An amazing gift.

Look, here's a video on UpWorthy about camp: HERE!

So where do I fit in? Well, in addition to my work as head of the Theatre Program, I was also asked to be Head Counselor of our one week session, which I was honored to accept.

My work in the Theatre Program includes one week program, and one two week program, two full shows, plus some one-off improv workshops for youth who just want to dabble. My program centers around using one's voice as activism, whether it's a puppet show about slut-shaming, or a spoken word piece about sex education in schools, or a dance piece about where the autistic and queer communities intersect. In fact, all of these things are real examples of past creations!!! These youth astound me. They are totally badass. My goal with this program is to empower them to speak in public, to support their ideas as individuals and collaborators, and to introduce them to as many performance genres as I can in a short time, and encourage them towards the ones that feel like a good fit. It's the best work I can think of.

But, of course, we’re on GoFundMe, so the question now is: Where do YOU fit in? SO GLAD YOU ASKED! This teaching position is volunteer only, which means it is 27 unpaid days total between training, being a staff member, and unloading camp over two separate sessions. It’s hard as hell asking for help, but I’m doing it, because I believe very strongly in this camp and their mission, and I believe I am the right person for this job. If you think I am too, I’d love a boost.

Your investment in me is your investment in Brave Trails and in some of the future leaders of America. If you think I’m a good fit for this job, and you want to help a brother out, I really really appreciate it.

I’m hoping to make up to $2000, which will offset my expenses, including boarding the dog, buying new underroos and sneakers, getting costuming for nighttime events, and paying for bills while I am away making $0.  I will cut off fundraising there because I'm no scamma jamma, y'all. (If you feel the need to throw money at Brave Trails as a company after that, hit them up at bravetrails.org. They love money and use it for things like scholarships and MOAR SMORES!)

Thanks for your time and your cold hard cash. Let’s send Petey to camp!!

love,
petey.
