THE STORY:
In January 2015, the Van Wyk family was delivered the terrible news that their only child, Joshua, had developed Pineoblastoma, an exceptionally aggressive and cancerous brain tumour. Joshua’s prospects were very bleak and what followed was a delicate surgery to remove the tumour, followed by a lengthy and gruelling treatment process involving various stints of chemotherapy and radiation.
A little over 17 months ago, despite all the odds against him and after bravely fighting for survival, Joshua went into remission and since then he has flourished and recovered to a degree no-one anticipated.
However, last week it was with a broken heart that we learned the cancer had returned. Tragically, the oncologist at Princess Margaret Hospital confirmed that this time there were no further treatment options available and that Joshua’s illness is now terminal.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
We cannot even begin to imagine the devastation this news has had on the family. We are desperate to afford Joshua’s parents, Oscar & Carien, the ability to be by the side of their only child and create as many wonderful memories as possible during the few months he has left. Additionally, Joshua’s medical expenses are likely to increase as his condition deteriorates and he needs a higher level of palliative care.
The ability for Oscar & Carien to take unpaid leave from work and be by Joshua’s side cannot happen without help. Furthermore the ability to fill Joshua’s remaining time with happiness and comfort cannot happen unless they have the finances to bless him with some of the memorable childhood experiences we often take for granted. For example, Joshua absolutely adores Lego and so it has always been Oscar & Carien’s desire to take him to Legoland. They have been advised by the medical team that Joshua will ideally need to undertake any activities of this nature as soon as possible and so time is of the essence if they are to make this happen.
In this utterly helpless situation, the gift of quality time with Joshua is the most priceless offering we can give this beautiful family. Any means by which we can relieve some of the financial burden on Oscar and Carien is vital so that their focus can be 100% on Joshua and ensuring his last few months are full of joy and happiness.
