Help Onyah Study Abroad!

Since the beginning of my academic career, my zealous appetite for education has flourished into an ever-growing tree of possibilities, and after much growth and discovery I realized that I am destined for greatness. My name is Onyah Sheely, and I am sophomore nutritional science major and chemistry minor at Howard University. Post-secondary education has expanded and increased my knowledge base so that I can truly make a difference in the world by impacting the lives of others. I have always had a desire to attend medical school because it will allow me to enhance my academic, social and emotional development while preparing me for my overall goal: becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon.

I have been offered a five-week fellowship to study abroad in Montevideo, Uruguay with Atlantis Global (formerly The Atlantis Project) this summer. During this program I will have the opportunity to shadow doctors in various specialties for more than sixty hours while abroad. I will also receive world-class pre-med advising and resources before, during, and up to two years after the program. Participating in The Altantis Fellowship will not only allow me to see the world, but also experience a different style of education. Shadowing internationally can expose me to things I may not have been able to experience here in the United States. This program will open my eyes to a new perspective on language, culture, education and expand my willingness to learn. Atlantis would enrich my career by allowing me to view medicine through a new perspective. Other countries are often more advanced in medicine than the United States, so traveling abroad would grant me first-hand access to these groundbreaking discoveries. Science has always been a passion of mine, and as a nutritional science major, healthcare is particularly important to me. I love to educate those around me about nutrition and what it means to be healthy.

Unfortunately, there is only one thing standing in the way of this opportunity: the cost. To participate in the Montevideo program, the total cost is $5,840. This does not include my flight, which is an additional $1,330. They have also recommended that we bring between $700-$1,000 for food and other activities. Though it may seem like a lot, this opportunity will certainly give back tenfold later on in my future. Any donation, no matter the amount, will bring me one step closer to taking me to Uruguay. Thank you all so much for your time, and your continuous support!
