In 2017, Nichola published her first book, called Climbing the Ladder of Life- living with Crohn’s disease.
This book touched many lives in different ways, to share Nichola's personal story of survival , after 17 surgeries , living with Crohn’s disease at that stage . The trials and tribulations of Nichola's life. Through adversity it has opened many gates of opportunities for Nichola.
Now TEN years on, Nichola is still striving forward to help educate, and give hope / faith to others living with IBD ( Crohn’s disease ) also her ideas and experiences to never give up (keep climbing back ) Nichola has endured depression that can come also when living with such a chronic extensive complex history as Nicholas.
She believes in always having a dream and keep going. To beat that black dog too.
This book coming out in 2019, is a combination of Allied Health, Conventional and Holistic approach to life ( looking at a whole person ) a multidisciplinary approach to living with IBD, a team of professionals ranging from Nicholas Surgeon, Gastroenterologist, Osteopath, Animal therapy, Stoma nurse, Dietician ( to name a few ) Goldcoast hospital health professionals, along with Nichola as the guiding narrator and her personal experience along the way. It is not a medical journal, it is a handbook for living with Crohn’s disease.
Some other amazing Crohn’s heros sharing their personal story also to inspire others in life.
16 people behind Nichola contributing to her book. She had an idea and has now achieved this, Now years on, after approximately 25 surgeries or more, over 30 years , Nichola is still here to tell the story !! She was diagnosed at 17, and also lost her mum from cancer at the same time, from the age 17 Nichola has been in hospital nearly every year for different periods of time. She is now 49 years of age.
Some very close calls to heaven in her life. After a recent nasty setback, late last year and very recent with a large bowel obstruction again she wants to treasure her small piece of bowel remaining.
Nichola often has lots of humour, to lighten up real life times. ( Nichola at present has 260cm of small bowel left now ) her large bowel, part of her small bowel, rectum and reproductive area are all removed, she has a permanent ileostomy and this has kept her alive, simply another way to go to the toilet.
At present she has a stricture, many adhesions in what’s left of her bowel, so Nichola is currently on puréed food. Mainly liquid nutrition to prevent further surgery/ obstructions or her bowel. Her surgeon literally saved her life in 2012, in ICU her sister said to her come back and help others, she never forgot this. Here she is doing just that. Nichola is one step from
Living on a feeding machine if she requires more surgery which she is remaining positive not to have yet.
Why did Nichola want to write book no 2 ? To keep educating others, supporting, give hope and give strength to many others worldwide in life . Patients AND families enduring IBD. To share her team of professionals that have assisted her in life and help others from her own heart.
To simply touch many lives again.
