Thank you everyone for your support! We have reached our goal, and are grateful to continue receiving donations. Any additional funds will be allocated to the items described below plus any taxes we have to pay on receiving the funds. Thank you!!!

Summary

We are La Cañita, one of the only queer transfeminist cultural venues in Mexico City.  A place of convergence and celebration for queer, trans, and feminist people, allies, families, and workers. The weekend of May 3-5, we were the victims of a series of violent hate crimes when two men entered our space and beat up our staff and guests. Six people suffered serious physical injuries and we all suffered emotional trauma. We also experienced damage to our venue when the attackers smashed chairs and bottles and lit our awning on fire.

The Mexico City agencies responsible for LGBTQ and human rights have formally named the attack a hate crime and we are being protected by a protocol for threatened activists. The city has offered substantial attention to our case, is in proceedings to try the offenders, and has advised us that it is safe to reopen. We are grateful for the legal protections and are determined to continue our work.

Unfortunately, we are currently struggling with thousands of dollars in expenses that threaten the future of La Cañita. We expect to get around $100 USD from our insurance but will have to cover the rest ourselves. From the bottom of our hearts we ask that you donate to help us cover medical bills, venue repairs, economic losses, and most importantly, ensure the security of our workers and staff moving forward. Please help la Cañita stay open for the queer and allied communities of Mexico City! We will forever be grateful to you!

The campaign will be open until June 24th. Please donate *today* to help us reach our goal!

Detailed Description

La Cañita is a community safe space. During the day we’re a restaurant, and at night we throw parties and cultural events. We pride ourselves on being a place where diverse communities -- from activists to families and local teens -- can hang out and share common ground.

On May 3rd, two men entered La Cañita yelling homophoic slurs and beat up our staff and guests. Our bartender Thania was attacked with a broken bottle and metal chair and is recovering from a gash to her head, a bone fissure, and a deep cut to her hand which required seven stitches. Marian was hit in the head with a bottle and got a concussion. Diana was punched in the face and is still experiencing swelling and a loose molar. Miguel Angel suffered a broken nose. The two men damaged our bar and threw bottles and chairs at our guests.

On May 4th the men returned to intimidate us. On May 5th, they set fire to our awning.  After the attack, we closed La Cañita for 12 days to start to heal and assess how to move forward.

In addition to the emotional and physical trauma, we have suffered overwhelming economic losses and are struggling to stay open. Please help in whatever way you can. Your donation will be allocated toward:

Recovery:

-Reimbursement of medical expenses we paid for all the workers and guests
-Replacing our awning, facade, and furniture
-Legal assistance to help navigate insurance, restraining orders, and other processes
-Group therapy for our staff
-Reimbursement for the debts incurred from closing for two weeks but still paying rent and salaries

Security measures:

-Installation of security cameras
-Installation of panic button direct to the police
-A private security guard, for at least 3-4 months, as we work with the city to get police protection
-Trainings for our staff on how to respond to violence

More on La Cañita

La Cañita is led by the lesbian couple Diana J. Torres (La Pornoterrorista), a writer, sex educator and performance artist and Ali Gua Gua (DJ Guaguis), a DJ and co-founder of the bands Las Ultrasonicas and Kumbia Queers. Our staff is composed of queer, femme, nonbinary workers, and people from the neighborhood.

The attacks we suffered have been formally recognized by COPRED (Counsel for the Prevention and Elimination of Discrimination of Mexico City) the Public Prosecutor, the Office of Human Rights of the Department of Public Safety, and we are being treated under the Mechanism for the Protection for Activists and Journalists of Mexico City. We will get some legal help from these agencies, but negligible economic assistance for most of our expenses.

Your donation is vital to us. We are mainly sending this out to international networks because dollars and euros go far here. $20, $50, $100, $500 -- it's all f*cking radical and seriously appreciated. And, please, please help us by spreading the word to your networks and any queer, feminist, or LGBTQ organizations you know who might be able to help us connect to funding.

GoFundme Campaign
*Important*
The money raised from this campaign will be first transferred to Melina Gaze and then she will transfer it to us. We had to do it this way because Gofundme only works with US bank accounts and we don't have one. So Melina is going to receive the funds for us in her US bank account and then transfer to us via Wetransfer.

Tu donación será destinada a:
