Help a Nerd Finish her Studies and Support a Charity of Your Choice

Hi Everyone,

My name is Lizette Vorster and I am a PhD student at Coventry University. I am currently in the second year of my degree in Intercultural Marketing. My research focuses on the social role of marketers in creating multicultural communities through inclusive and sincere campaigns. I am a qualified graphic designer and decided to further my education so I can really make a difference to society. I come from South Africa and am passionate about research in culturally diverse societies, particularly in developing countries and finding ways to use marketing for good, for example as a means to end discrimination in any way or form.

My research is going really well, including potential contributions to:

1.       transformative consumer research in developing individual and group wellbeing;

2.       marketing theory in terms of viable and sustainable strategies for working within culturally diverse communities;

3.       social policy developments by governing bodies.

However, I was recently informed that my biggest funder is no longer willing to contribute to my tuition fees as they would rather focus their money elsewhere. Which is utterly devastating as it means that at the end of April I will have to stop my studies, as I will be unable to pay my tuition fees for this year and my third (final) year.

As I am an international student, I have to pay much higher fees, which means it is extremely hard to earn enough to cover those fees. On top of my full-time studies, I work 3 part-time jobs to support myself with living costs. As you can imagine, that often means 12-16 hour days, 7 days a week. My family aren’t able to support me, my father passed away from cancer in May last year and my mother was retrenched after the company she worked for closed down. I am continuously searching for means to earn more money, including holding a fundraising quiz. However, I am still a long way off target and have exhausted all other avenues for support and thus I turn to you to help.

After I’ve finished my degree I would like to continue my work and make a difference to society by actively pursuing ways to improve people’s lives by strengthening their community support systems and developing social marketing. As I don’t need to wait till I’m done to start making a difference, I have decided to help a charity as a way to give back for what I get. So that means if I raise £500 I will volunteer my time (marketing and design services) to the same value. The first charity to receive this service is The Underdog Project - I can't wait to get going with them - they support 2 causes very close to my heart and build communities to boot! Check them out here: http://www.underdogproject.org/
I want to add more charities - so your suggestions are welcome!

Any donation, however big or small, is appreciated. And remember to choose your charity! My initial target is £8,500 (ideally I need £17,000, but my immediate need is to cover second year tuition fees by end April 2018). If you can’t help, please take a second to pass this on.

Thank you for your time and support,
Lizette
