Help Max & Sarah Adopt a Baby!

$22,935 of $38,000 goal

Raised by 192 people in 7 months
We always say that the last eight years of our lives have been the most challenging but also the most fulfilling and wonderful. One of the biggest things we have learned in our married life is that the two concepts can coexist. We have realized that when we are open with others, it not only frees us, but it helps others to feel comfortable doing the same, creating a community built on love and support.

In 2014, we decided it was finally the right time to expand our family as we celebrated five years of marriage. Shortly after, I (Sarah) had my first miscarriage, and over a period of three years, that number rose to four. Test after test occurred; loss after loss; procedure after procedure. Loss led to healing and then waiting and then hope. And the cycle repeated.

If you know us, you know we have been through some unforeseen difficult circumstances in our adult life beyond what was just described, but there are some factors that remain the same regardless of what we are dealing with: we stick together, we support and love each other, and we know that somehow, one day, it’s all going to be okay. We also believe in having a sense of humor through everything, even sometimes laughing through the tears. It’s not all sad. In our house, silly faces abound, we dance, we play with our dog/daughter Sophie Esmeralda (I can’t emphasize enough how much we love her – IT’S A LOT). But we still long to share our joyful life with (human) children of our own.

After a recent pregnancy loss followed by much testing and no real answers, we both came to a conclusion pretty much at the same time (this happens with us a lot). Adoption was something we discussed even while dating in the mid-2000s before any of this was a concrete issue in our lives. Now, we know that we are ready to be parents, but we are also ready to set aside the biological path (at least for now) and head in a different direction.

This is a very exciting time for us as a family and after much research, we are thrilled to be working with a great agency to make our dream come true. While we know we are definitely in a good position financially to be able to raise a child, the immediate fees from the adoption process are quite high, and must be paid as soon as the service is rendered. Examples of the process include educational classes, a home study and visit, placement fee, legal fees, etc. All of this for the domestic adoption of an infant comes out to upwards of $38,000. We are doing our best now to save and set aside money and apply to various grants, but as you can imagine, this cost is a lot at once.

It is a humbling experience deciding to ask for help as we are both very self sufficient people, but we also know that many of you, our loved ones, have asked over the years what you can do to help (and so many of you already have in so many ways!!!). And frankly, this is a moment we really need it. There is no pressure to give, but if you feel the desire to, any amount would be so gratefully appreciated, and will go towards helping us build upon our already happy family.

Thank you to our family and friends, who we love and appreciate so much, and who have been such an important part of our journey thus far. Please, please reach out to us if you have any questions at all!

ADOPTION UPDATE: As many of you know, we are in the process of adoption, which we are very excited about! We continue to be so humbled and touched by the many individuals and families who have generously supported us in this wonderful (and very expensive) endeavor. We are on the very last step before officially becoming a “waiting family!” Once our profile book is complete (we are CLOSE), we will be ready to welcome our little one home ANYTIME!

This said, we want to humbly ask that you join with us in this pursuit. As you can imagine, it is always hard to ask for money. Still, beyond what we have personally saved and raised already, we have calculated that we will need approximately an additional $19,000 upon the adoption placement. We are hoping to raise a bit more and also wanted to find a way to permanently acknowledge those of you who have already given or who have it on your hearts to be a part of the Pfeffer adoption.

Here’s how it works:
1. Sarah has designed a 520-piece puzzle which reads: “We didn’t give you the gift of life; life gave us the gift of you.”
2. We are “selling” each piece for $20. You can choose to buy 1, 2, 3, or 10! You can even go half with a friend!
3. To purchase via PayPal, please contact me - or you can send a check in the mail.
4. Once you purchase a piece, we will write your name on the back of one (or more, depending on the gift) and send you a picture.
5. Once every single piece has been “sold,” we will put the puzzle together and hang it in a double-sided glass frame for the baby’s room so that they can always look back and be reminded of who had a “piece” of bringing them home!

NOTE: We will be setting aside pieces for those who have already given outside of the Puzzle Fundraiser!

100% of the donations from our amazing community will go towards the placement fee.

If you wish to make an additional donation above the $20 price of a puzzle piece (first of all, that is awesome!), simply put the desired donation amount in PayPal or by check.

The other amazing way to help would be to spread this! Please consider sharing the Facebook post ( https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156091361804591&set=a.10150498761104591.390077.500289590&type=3&theater) with your communities. Thank you! We love you! Max & Sarah

Dear Friends & Family –
We hope you all had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving holiday! We have exciting news to share (not THE news, but still pretty good) – our home study has been approved and our video profile is complete! Our classes are done – we recently took our last one: an adoptive parent babycare class through Hartford Hospital, which was enlightening and a lot of fun. This means the only step we have left is to create a 10-page profile book with pictures and blurbs about our family. Once that is done, we will officially be a "waiting family" ready for a placement!

We could not have come to this point without you. Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donations as well as your personal support. We are continually amazed and touched that each of you felt the prompting to invest in our lives. There's still a ways to go as the total fees in the adoption process are upwards of $38,000, but we are confident that this is the right path for us and have faith that it will work out in the end.

We are thrilled at the prospect of bringing a baby into our home and can't wait to share that news with you when it comes.

All our love,
Sarah & Max
So happy to almost be a "waiting family"

Dear friends and family,
It's been a while, so we thought it was time for an update. We have gone through most of our adoption classes and info sessions and are now in the "home study" process, which includes filling out piles of paperwork, doing background checks, and writing our life stories. :) The exciting part is that we are quickly checking things off of our list and hope to have them all done very soon!! After that, we get a home visit from our social worker, create a profile, and then we are "in the books." We are hoping this all happens by late fall.

We are so deeply thankful for your support. There has been an absolute outpouring of love from so many, and we are very touched by how excited everyone is for us. Here's hoping it all goes quickly and smoothly.

Lots of love to all of you.

Sarah & Max
