An amazing community of people rallied together after hearing news of Matthew’s unexpected life-threatening health events. We raised funds that made it possible for Matthew and Kelli to cover expenses while he fought for his life, made impressive strides in recovery and even returned to his job in July.
On Thursday, October 19th, Matthew had an appointment with his doctor to review his recovery status. The doctor determined Matthew needed to immediately return to a medical leave from his work for another 6 months to focus his best energies on his recovery work. The reality of this development came as a major blow to Matthew and Kelli. Together, they persevere.
Matthew’s passion is to be a consistent, loving person in the lives of children in a way that leaves them feeling higher self-worth and strong about their ability to learn. He recognizes the value of having the opportunity to focus on his various therapies and to get the proper rest that he hopes will lead to more and more recovery. But his heart breaks over the need to step away from his work with the kids to achieve it.
With respect to the financial strain, the reduced pay he will receive while on medical leave is barely enough to cover the increased cost of his medical insurance while on COBRA. Matthew and Kelli are determined to find ways to afford this because it means he can keep all the same doctors who have worked with him these past 10 months. Of course they have other bills too, like the rest of us do. Who among us could have the primary bread-winner of your household lose their income and still stay afloat each month financially? I know I couldn’t do it. Kelli continues to work full time and remains Matthew’s primary care giver. What an inspiration she continues to be through all of this!
I have launched this new Go Fund Me campaign with a goal of $15,000. Please join me with whatever you can give. Together, we can do this! We need to pull together again to help Matthew afford to keep his doctors, allowing him to focus his best mental, physical and spiritual energy these next 6 months on his strong recovery.
Matthew’s demonstration of extreme perseverance in the face of severe life threatening events, pain and recovery thus far are among the most inspiring acts of courage I have ever seen. Please join me to quickly raise these funds that will cover Matthew’s COBRA insurance costs for the next 6 months, ensuring he can keep his doctors. It will also help pay for the therapies that insurance doesn't cover.
