Help Make Home More Accessible

In early June of this year, my father Floyd Bishop Sr fell and broke his upper leg. While a full hip replacement wasn't necessary, they did have to put in three screws via a large incision, requiring ten staples to close. He has been staying at Wayne Woodlands Manor since then, where he has been slowly recovering.

While an injury such as this is bad on its own, my father also suffers from dementia, making it harder for him to follow directions for physical therapy, cooperate with taking medicine, or understand why he cannot go home.

This is where you come in. In order for my father to return home, my parents' house needs to have some accessibility modifications to make things easier for both my father and my mother, his caretaker. In addition to some simple things like hand rails, and minor doorway modifications, they would benefit greatly from a shower or tub on the first floor of their home so that my father won't have to traverse the steep staircase in their house.

For decades, my parents have helped friends and neighbors in all kinds of ways, big and small, including babysitting, dress alterations, volunteering at events, letting their kids' friends tag along on camping trips, letting public officials put campaign signs on their lawn, allowing people to sleep over and give them breakfast if they were on a trip or if the mountain near their home got too slippery in the winter - the list goes on and on.
