Help Maddie attend the NYLF STEM summer program

I am a 5th grader at Washington Elementary School in Wyandotte and have been nominated to represent my school and community at the National Youth Leadership Forum: Pathways to STEM. By attending this program, I will join other motivated students from around the country for a week long experiential leadership/career exploration program. This will be a powerful experience, enabling me to interact with respected professionals in various fields while building relationships with students who will be my future colleagues.
Attending this program will enable me to further my interest in the field of technology and engineering, and reach my career goals of becoming a software developer. I maintain a 4.0 GPA, am involved in Coding Club, Girl Scouts, Gymnastics, Help Club, and Instrumental Music. I have attended a STEM summer camp at the University of Michigan where I worked to create wearable tech, and this summer I will be attending a summer camp focusing on coding in Python. In a few weeks, I will also be participating in a Hackathon through AccelerateKids and Girl Scouts. I have already programmed different types of computers like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi and used them in some of my bigger projects, like my science fair project where I did a study on how steady people’s hands are based on age.
Imagine if you had been given this opportunity for a life-changing experience when you were in school and were unable to participate for lack of funds. That is why I am starting this GoFundMe. My participation in the program depends on whether I can raise $2584 in sponsorships & fundraising. The program tuition is $2384 and my travel to the program will be approximately $200. I am investing every dollar I can of my own money to make sure I don’t miss out on this unique experience and am also planning a bake sale, a car wash, and a candy bar fundraiser to raise the funds I need. In addition, I am applying for a scholarship and asking local businesses to sponsor me.
When I grow up I would like to do many different things. I would like to be a computer programmer and work with newer and harder types of codes. I would also like to be an engineer and invent something new. I want to build a robot-flown helicopter that purifies polluted air. I would like to be a scientist and examine things with microscopes. I love learning new thing and making discoveries. I want to program and build life like robots. I think this experience will teach me many new things and help me to come out of my shell because I have always been very shy. I would love to be a famous scientist one day and a role model for others. I want to encourage other kids to code and do all sorts of things that deal with STEM. Coding is a great activity and really makes you think. I think that STEM activities have really taught me a lot.
I like to talk a lot about how women and men should have equal opportunities in STEM fields. One of my goals is to increase the percentage of women in STEM. Having more women in STEM has always been one of my passions. I use women leaders as my mentors and I always think about them to give me my confidence.
I hope to give myself a wonderful life working with STEM. I also hope to encourage other girls. I feel that participating in this program will really help me get more of a head start on becoming a leader. Sample of Programming:
-Students develop and enhance their crime-solving skills in CSI: Examining the World. Young detectives will probe deep into the world of forensic science as they attempt to crack a case. Using finger print and blood drop analysis, deductive reasoning, and forensic science, these super sleuths will uncover critical clues as they seek to identify the guilty party. Students must work diligently during the session, applying their newly acquired skills to the case at hand.
-The engineers of tomorrow will undertake hands-on design challenges in Engineering: Bots & Programming. Students delve into the world of engineering as they explore the engineering design process. To further practice their engineering skills, students will program robots to compete in the NYLF Pathways to STEM robotics challenge!
-As prospective medical interns in Medicine: The Incredible Human Body, students embark on a fascinating journey into the most complex of machines —- the human body. Students will examine aspects of human anatomy, focusing on the heart. Students will even participate in a dissection! The journey culminates with scholars examining the needs of a patient, presenting an original plan of care, and gaining an understanding of public health at work today.
-Stepping Forward as a Leader: The leadership curriculum is the cornerstone of the program experience. Daily interactive learning activities present students with guided practice and individual application in small team settings. The important concepts and skills introduced lay the groundwork for growth and personal development in five key leadership areas: self-management, time management, communication, collaboration, and goal setting.
