Ma. Theresa’s Memorial

The year 2018, my aunt Maria Theresa Duazo was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, an immune disorder that affects the kidneys and joints. She has been suffering for over a year now, becoming more and more ill every day as she develops complications of her disease.

With her immune system being suppressed with therapy, infectious diseases have a harder effect on her than normal. She has become septic due to a developing ulceration and an abscess formation in her arm.

She is based in the Philippines, where I used to live. Our healthcare is improving but still not enough. If you are poor, you just fade away due to lack of support from government agencies and lack of resources.

She went to the doctor to have it checked and when she knew how much the cost was, she never returned. Suffered in silence.

This is a complicated case which needs a more than usual kind of treatment.

She now needs antibiotic therapy which uses a strong and expensive type of antibiotic as the abscess is slowly developing. The bones on her arm is broken and needs operation as well.

Before I even came here in the UK as a nurse in the NHS, I experienced first hand how good and kind a mother she is who looks out for children not even her own. She loves to make cakes and every time she gives me a slice, it’s always with extra icing.

She works as a public school teacher. She works day in and day out to teach children for a meager amount of salary that she budgets to support her own children.

It would be deeply appreciated the help and support you’d provide for her. This is the least I could do for her for the good she’s shown the world. Let us make her do what she loves again; to teach and to bake sweet cakes.

“God shall wipe all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.”

Such sweetness there is in life. Same could be said for my aunt who is dearly beloved through her life.

It is of deepest sorrow that I inform you of my aunt’s passing. I can only imagine the grief my cousins are feeling.

We may no longer taste the sweetness of her baking but we will forever treasure her memories. We may weep but only because we remember the great life she has lived.

We love you Tiya Ita and you are forever dear in our hearts.
