April 2018 was a frightening month for the family of 16-month old Lex. He started the month with a high fever, pain when he walked, and diarrhea. After several weeks of doctor appointments at Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, he was diagnosed with Monocytic Acute Myeloid Leukemia (also referred to as AML M5).
As terrifying as it is to know he has cancer, it has brought the family some peace, because they now have a plan of action. This form of Leukemia is rare, but very treatable, with a known course of chemotherapy.
The family has an idea of his schedule for the months to come and they have a rough road ahead of them. Lex will be in the hospital for at least the next month. He will receive continuous chemotherapy for 10 days, followed by 3 weeks of recovery in a clean environment to bring his immune system up to a minimal level before being able to leave. And that is just the first course of chemo. His entire treatment could be 3-6 months in duration and most likely end with a bone marrow transplant.
Lex has a wonderful family. His parents, Sara and Andrew Hall, and his grandparents, Doug and Kathy Snell, are by his side constantly. Lex’s Aunts and Uncles and his paternal grandparents, Art and Charlotte Hall, visit as much as they can and send balloons, mail, and prayers.
Lex and his family will need to live in Portland for the foreseeable future, establishing a ‘home’ away from home. All proceeds from this Gofundme, will go to Lex and his family to establish that home and pay for his uncovered medical expenses.
Expenses we know of so far:
· Rental in Portland during tourist season when they can get away from the hospital
· Food for Family (only Sara, as a nursing mother, is provided meals)
· Expenses for maintenance of Philomath home
· Gas
· Parking
· Incidentals
· Unmet medical expenses
