Help Law Student Study Abroad

Hello family and friends! Here's what I have been up to while in law school. Acknowledging that I can talk for days, you can skip the update and go to the starred paragraph where I explain my coming study abroad trip to London.

In May 2017, I started an accelerated 2 year law program. As most of you would expect, I jumped right in to my new community and got involved. I excelled in my first semester and was in the top 25%. I've been awarded two scholarships thus far and am believing God for an increase to a full scholarship for the rest of my schooling. In November, I took a leap of faith and tried out for the National Mock Trial Team even though I had not yet had the suggested coursework. Well, with Gods help, I became the first 1L to make the team!

I am an active member of the Black Law Student Association, Criminal Law Association, Sports and Entertainment Law Society, American Constitution Society, Federalist Society, Hispanic Student Association, Intellectual Property Law Society, Volunteer Student Law Project, Christian Law Society, as well as three bar associations and four national law associations. I also serve as the Law representative on the UD Bias Response Advisory Committee.

I was elected this spring to be on the board for both Black Student Law Society and Volunteer Student Law Project for this coming school year. I was also elected to serve on the Honor Council.

Aside from participating in various organizations, I actively go out and volunteer in the community. I’ve volunteered at the Wills for Heroes event, Re-Entry Stop Clinic, House of Bread soup kitchen, was a judge at UD’s Undergrad Mock Trial Competition, and participated in two community 5k events.

Law school is no small task. It can be very demanding, time consuming, challenging and exhausting. Law school goes beyond typical school and focuses on retraining how you think in general thus making it mentally and physically demanding. BUT at the same time, law school is awesome! It is fulfilling, exciting, interesting, stimulating and at times fun.

Being away from home in this stressful environment has caused me to grow closer in my relationship with God. In those tough moments when I did not know where to turn and could not lean on my parents or friends, I found out just how strong my faith in God was. When I couldn't do, God did. Every step I take, I take in God. With every exam, I wear my faith shirts and bracelets to remind me that I am a conqueror, victorious and an achiever. Every day, I say my daily declarations and confirmations. God is awesome and has kept me grounded. My faith is truly in action. I have testimonies for days!

This journey has had its setbacks as I lost my grandfather, grandmother, a close family friend and even my family pet over the past school year. It really was tough to lose such important people and not be around the way I wanted to help my family with the grieving process. Nevertheless, my one takeaway is this; time is not promised and life is unexpected.  I want to live my life to the fullest and go beyond my expectations. Life is bigger than me and I plan to use my life to have an impact on the world.

Having said all that, lets get to the reason for this post. Clearly, once I graduate from school, I will be looking to practice as a lawyer. I plan to begin my career in Sports and Entertainment law focusing on Players Associations, Contracts, and Negotiations. With that in mind, I have to constantly seek opportunities while I am in school to gain experience, network and educate myself in the field.

I have joined Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association as well as Sports Lawyers Association for my networking goals. Being that my school does not have a sports concentration available, I have sought out and been creating my own concentration. I did an independent study this semester focusing in sports law and found a global sports certificate program at Columbia Law.

***The exciting announcement is that I found a study abroad program in LONDON this summer where I will be studying international sports law and international entertainment law!!! I will be taking classes in London while still taking online classes at my home university.

Financially, this means I had to take out additional loans to pay for two school tuitions. The damage for this summer is:

Total for both schools tuition and housing: $24, 169 +  Airfare + Meals + Transportation + Entertainment + Weekend trips + other various expenses.

Yes, it is a large financial commitment but the true value and experience is invaluable!

Now let me be clear.....I am 100% believing God to come through again as He always has. I prayed for my financial increase. Confessed it. Believe it. And Receive it. Knowing, God sends us blessing in many ways, if you choose to be one of those ways, thank you! I know God is going to work things out as ALL things are working together for my good because I love God and am called according to His purpose!

Be blessed. Be fearless. Be determined. Step Out on Faith. Explore. Encourage. Live Life on Purpose.

Love Always,
Keira
