Laura's Story

Hi, my name is Laura Mancine. I was in a pretty serious automobile accident on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2017, after leaving work at BJ's Wholesale Club. It was 9:15 p.m. and it was dark, and a co-worker had given me a large, Valentine's Day heart helium balloon, because my husband left me rather abruptly in November 2016, after nearly 30 years together. It was a precious gesture to brighten my day.

Unfortunately, the helium balloon kept getting in my line of vision, and it was dark, and I hit a curb. Within seconds, I hit head-on into a large palm tree. Thankfully, I hadn't made it to the street, yet, so no other vehicles or persons were affected by the accident. The tree was in the median, just leaving the BJ's parking lot. I knew immediately that my leg was broken, because there was no function to it, but because of the smoke coming out of my car--out of sheer fear--I managed to crawl out of the passenger side and fell to the ground. A co-worker called 911. The paramedics arrived promptly, and they determined I had broken my right femur (thigh bone). My blood pressure was sky-high and I am a diabetic. They airlifted me to ORMC in Downtown Orlando, from Clermont, Florida. I had surgery to repair my femur, which was broken in two, separate pieces. They implanted a permanent titanium rod and pins into my leg. I have four, large incisions closed with staples on my hip, two on my thigh, and one near my knee. It is more than one foot (12") of staples.

Unfortunately, ORMC is not in my HMO network, and so I am very anxious to see my medical bills, not to mention, a helicopter transport. I was in the hospital for nearly one week, and I had to have a blood transfusion. The medical bills will be in the thousands of dollars. My car was a total loss, but I cannot drive anyway.

I am recovering at home, alone, with my dog, Bella, and a nurse and physical therapist come to help me several times a week. I am reliant on friends to bring me food as my parents are elderly and live in Tampa, and the rest of my family lives on the West Coast of Florida and Baltimore, Maryland. My precious son is attending college at UCF, and between classes, his job transcribing calls for the deaf, his UCF internship, his involvement with an on-campus philosophy group, and his studies, his time is extremely limited. No help has been offered by my husband or his family.

I am using a walker to make my way to the bathroom and the kitchen. I also have a 3-in-1 for the bathroom and to bathe.'

I have been with BJ's for 2 1/2 years, but was never given more than 30 hours per week, so I am ineligible for medical benefits and short-term disability. As a result, I am not getting paid during my recovery which will be 4-6 weeks. Sadly, the bills keep coming and there will be many, many more very soon.

I have been donating blood my whole life, but never thought I would be the one in need of a blood transfusion. I also have volunteered in my communities for years, raising thousands of dollars in sponsorships for the athletic programs at Lake Minneola High School and Poinciana Little League. I served as Fundraising Chairperson for the Lake Minneola High School Athletic Booster Club and the Poinciana Little League Board of Directors. I also served as Team Mom for LMHS football for three years, where I solicited sponsorship dollars, as well as local restaurant establishments to donate food for the boys. I drove alone every game day, Thursday and Friday, each week to pick up the food from the various restaurants, set up in the school Cafeteria, and I fed both the JV and the Varity football players their pre-game meals. There were many other responsibilities associated with being Team Mom as well. I served with love and passion.

I also served on the Board of Directors for our Homeowners Association for three years, so I definitely believe in giving back to your community.

Anything you can donate to help me in this unexpected and very scary situation would be greatly appreciated. Any donation, large or small, would be a God-send to me at this point.

Thank you so much for your love and support.

Love, Laura
