Help LASA from JCU get to USHLI

Donation protected
John Carroll University's Latin American Student Organization needs help going to USHLI in Chicago this year. USHLI stands for the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. At this conference we have the chance to meet different Latinos, and non-Latinos from around the country. We have a chance to engage with people like Antonia Novella who was a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served as 14th Surgeon General of the United States from 1990 to 1993. Novello is the first woman and first Hispanic to serve as Surgeon General. She inspires many Latinas to go for their dreams and uses words of encouragement and knowledge to fuel us. We meet people like Denice Froman who is a poet, writer, performer and educator, whose work explores the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. Frohman uses her experience as a queer woman from a multicultural background in her writing. We meet many people at these conferences who we are able to network with for future jobs or internships. We network with other students from different universities and colleges for future relationships and collaborations.  As members of this spectacular conference we engage in "work cycles" where we listen to speakers who have gone through things we have. Last year I heard from "the Cuban Guy" who travels around the world as a motivational interactive speak. A gentleman from Cornell University who spoke about his struggles of getting there and being there. We are able to grow and learn so much at this conference. As Students of John Carroll University we try to bring back as much as we can that we learned. We want to continue impacting our John Carroll communities and the communities we serve. With these donations we will be able to afford our trip there and back. We would be able to afford our admission to this conference as well. Also housing in Chicago during the conference. We have had one negative experience, but that does not stop us. After coming back from the conference last year, members of our organization were stopped by border patrol. We were racially profiled and this puts us in danger for taking public transit. We choose to fight the odds and attempt by all means to make it to this conference. The conference leaves a big impact on the students who attend. We always try to bring back what we learned and share it in our community by an event, or a workshop held at John Carroll after the conference.  The Latin American Student Organization also plans to physically fund raise for this trip as well. We hope that you can help us grow and learn, so that we can impact and grow in our communities. Any donation will help. Please feel free to share this post! Thank you for making a difference in our future and the future of the world.
