Help L ord Dashy 2nd "Back" surgery

Lord Dashington (fondly know as Dashy)

Well its certainly been a huge night for some last night (Friday 2nd June), Dashy had had an IVDD relapse during the week and we were all hoping that after his vet visit that strict crate rest and meds for a month would suffice.

But yesterday took a turn for the worse when Dashy last night he lost all bladder and bowel control and could not walk.

After leaving him back at the vets, for an hour, it became quite obvious this little man of Paula Harrison’s was going to need surgery once again.

Our dear member Angela Meeham helped with transport; picked up Dashy from the vets and drove to Gatton UQ at 7:30 pm.

Dashy was examined by Dr Jayne (Surgeon at Gatton) immediately and due to his condition he needed to be operated on immediately.

The UQ team was brought back in as it was now well into “after hours” surgery and Dashy was operated on.

This is devastating for Paula Harrison, as she had nursed Dashy through his last surgery, did the full recovery and re habilitation with him, and spent so many hours next to him, nurturing him to a full recovery.

This disease that affects 1 in 4 of our dachshunds; has a 30% chance of reoccurring, some will make it through with conservative treatment, and some sadly will need surgical intervention which is a costly fee, the heartbreak to see your dachshund in so much pain is hard enough to deal with, let alone a huge bill for surgery, if you are lucky enough for the episode to occur during week days the operation will generally be $3000 less than a night or weekend.

For Paula she now faces a $7000 bill.

With the help of a friend who has lent her some money, Dashy was able to have his surgery last night, however their remains a bill of $7000 that must be paid before Dashy is able to be released from UQ, which is expected all going well in 5 days time.

We are going to need some help once again, as much as don’t want to ask, I have put myself into these shoes and know that I need to at least try.

Paula was knocked back IVDD insurance for Dashy many years ago at age 1, from a note that a vet had put on his file that he had a hip dysplasia, which she was told by the insurers that this would affect a claim for IVDD.

Our Dachshunds are precious to us, and this debilitating disease just keeps on going on, some insurance companies now will not even cover this condition, and many I have noticed from recent comments from people on our Facebook pages have put their premiums up due to the amount of dachshunds affected.

I guess the best we can do, is try to help Paula in some little way and I would be grateful for any donation that people can spare.

Thank you for your support and if you can share share share that would be wonderful.
