Hello Village!
Most of you know my family immigrated from South Africa many years ago. Somehow we came from a third world country to Purcellville, Virginia in one of the wealthiest counties in America. I am extrememly grateful for the oppurtunities that we have been given in this country and for everyone who helped us get here.
Though South Africa will always hold my roots, I have embraced this country as my own and feel blessed to raise my children here. I have held my green card for 10 years and it recently expired in October.
A year ago, I became a single mom. It has been an extremely challenging year for me, emotionally and financially. It is SO hard for me to reach out for help in this way. I want to be able to do everything myself, in my own strength and capacity, but I have hit a wall. I started school this past semester and am so driven to get my degree to comfortably be able to support myself and my two girls. The only thing that is holding me back is my immigration status. I am not able to enroll in school and receive in-state tuition without a valid greencard or citizenship.
Currently I'm doing all that I can with the time that I have. I have three days a week without children to go to school and work. I am making do with what I make but barely have anything leftover for extra expenses.
SO! I am putting aside my single momma independent woman pride and asking for help. It costs $725 to apply for citizenship. Please help me become an American so I can continue moving my family forward.
