Help Karrie Replace her Computer

Donation protected
Karrie Higgins has become a leader in experimental intermedia-driven creative writing. With recognition including two notables from Best American Essays, receiving the Schiff award for prose and multiple interviews with literary and artistic magazines. This year Karrie's essay in response to Trump Tape was listed among 30 most transformative essays of 2016 alongside some of her literary heroes, two of her essays were nominated for Best American Essays and one was nominated for a Pushcart. She won a grant this year for artists facing disability, and this grant will prevent homelessness by helping with living expenses during what has become an extended period of unemployment for our family.

At the same time, Karrie faces significant barriers. With epilepsy and bipolar which have impacted her life and shaped her world view from her youth and a birth defect that has caused Karrie to have holes in her spinal cord, she requires a walking cane, has ataxia, experiences eye tracking difficulties, and is partly deaf. She also has auditory processing disorder, which is like dyslexia, except with sound. Because Karrie can't drive due to her disabilities, she is extremely isolated in the apartment complex in which we live, outside of town, up the stairs and on the wrong side of the greenspace with missing sidewalks in many places and often inaccessible bus stops. Karrie's intermedia work, which is largely carried out through the internet, is her primary source of social interaction, social protest, and livelihood.

This week her computer died. Karrie edits video, photography and audio and designs fabric, all which are processor intensive. We are seeking funds to replace her Macintosh Pro so Karrie can continue her important writing, intermedia and activism.

Activism? Yes, in addition to being an artist Karrie is a voice for disability rights. Working from an identity-first perspective, Karrie advocates for accessibility, acceptance, inclusion of people as they are.

Your support today helps keep this important work going and ensures she can continue to create work for her grant, without risking not being able to pay for rent (and soon, medications). Karrie has already had to turn down invited submissions and projects. She is hesitant to ask for more money, yet several friends suggested we start a fundraiser. Karrie was not sure but decided to take them up on it. Thank you for your support.
