On Saturday, March 26th our close family friend and father to 4 young children, Iftikhar Mian, lost his long and valiant fight against cancer. Being told multiple times by the doctor that he only had a short while, Iftikhar fought over 2 years to stay with his family. He fought to see his children grow up, to read to them, to put them to bed, to live for them. He left behind a homemaker wife and 4 children, Bilal (age 10), Zanib (age 9), Anya (age 8), and Aiza (age 4). As he slipped in and out of conscious, he mustered up the energy in his last breath to ask for forgiveness and, above all, to look after his kids. Watching his kids tear struck face seeing their father, and with him all their hopes getting buried, kids who looked up to me as role model, I decided with every fiber in my being that I would look out for their wellbeing. As

Iftikhar was a young, smart, entrepreneurial, religious, and loving family man. He was an active member of his religious community and was en-route to starting his own business. He was that guy who always gave money out to the children on Eid, and would be always volunteer to help plan community events as he saw it as his duty to work for the people. But alas, cancer has no rulebook, class, religion, race, or creed. It just attacks anyone indiscriminately at its will and wreaks havoc on them and their loved ones lives.

As the prayer rituals commence, reality is beginning to sink in with the realization that the father, husband, and sole bread winner of the house is no longer here. With medical terms, prayers, and wishes of wellbeing all passing through the family’s ears, all that the mother and her young children see is their father not being with them ever again.

Repudiating the fact that the family had been given notice that he only had a short while to live, Iftikhar convinced his family with his unwavering determination that the world was still intact, that everything would be ok, and being the fighter that he was, that he would win his fight against cancer. Everyone strongly believed that he would stand tall and wrap his arms around his children with his signature bear hugs like he used to, and not be bedridden forever as the doctors were foreseeing. No distance can ever separate his love for his 4 beloved young children. Even if he’s not here anymore, he is always in the family and communities heart as a loving and kind hearted man.

Iftikhar had reached out to local county offices asking for help for his wife and children before he passed, but having little to no experience in dealing with issues such as this and being the only fluent English speaker in the family, he could only do so much under the stress and pain that he was in, with some mild success from a few social workers.

Iftikhar’s family is in desperate need of help and don’t understand how they’re going to make ends meet, how they will make their mortgage payments, groceries, car insurance, gas, utilities, and the children’s necessities. They were aware of the financial loss they were going through since he was unable to work. Iftikhars friends have helped the family to the best of their abilities but the family knows that they can only depend on others for so long. Now it is our turn to help Iftikhars’ family during their time of need.

As of right now, we are uncertain of the total amount needed for the expenses. The family would sincerely appreciate all the help during this grave time. I will keep everyone updated on their recovery. Please keep the family, especially the children, in your prayers.

There will be Quran recitation in memory of Mian Iftikhar Hussain this Sunday (April 2nd) at the Masjid in Alexandria from Asr to Maghrib time. Please find time to come and recite Quran and give your support to his beloved family.
