Help Honey's Heartworms

"I've always wanted a sister," my 5-year-old son said as we drove to the vet. On July 3, I was driving home in the pouring rain. I almost hit an animal on the road. Something told me I needed to stop. I got out of my car and got soaked in the rain, calling for a sweet dog to come over to me. She walked up to and she was in rough shape. She was limping. Her hair was matted. And her collar was so tight I don't know how she was breathing. I took her to the shelter to check for a chip or tags. Nothing. They told me they were all at capacity and couldn't take in other days. No worries, I thought. She felt like my girl already. I took her to a neighbor's house and he said, "I've never seen that dog before in my life."

I took this sweet, old girl home and gave her a bath. She got along SO WELL with my other dog, Bandit. I feed them goldfish crackers because I ran out of dog treats. We called the Vet and tried to make an appointment for first available. She follows me everywhere I go. She sleeps in the corner of our room. She smiles. She jumps with excitement before getting a dog treat. And she's hardly made any messes in our house. We named her "Honey" - because I call everyone "Honey" and her fur reminds Cooper of honey.

The Vet told us she has fleas and heartworms. The treatment for heartworms involves a 2-night hospital stay and month-long recovery. The cost of this procedure is $1,007.20. We paid $450.00 for her exam, shots, and medicine on July 6, 2019.  The Vet said she looks healthy, other than these issues, and she believes Honey is between 7 and 10 years old (max). She is extremely sweet and loving.

With anxiety, I shared the news on Twitter with my friends. Ben and Jordan immediately encouraged me to start a GoFundMe to help support this darling girl of ours.  Thank you for inspiring me, friends! "Nothing great is ever done alone."

By donating, I will make sure you get a photo update from our girl after surgery.  I'll keep you updated on her progress, story, and maybe I'll even host a meet-up so you can meet the girl you helped save. Without this procedure, she will go into cardiac arrest and die. I don't have ANY clue how long she's had these heartworms - maybe since she was a puppy. So the clock is ticking and I am determined to save our girl!
