Help Haitians Build a School

Donation protected
What is the problem we want to solve?
In Didier, a small community in the Artibonite Valley in rural Haiti, the parents want to educate their children. They value education and see it as a path to a better life but, with no public school system in Haiti and being situated in a remote location, schools are not accessible to the estimated 600 children in the region. They have tried building with indigenous materials but that was not sufficient. They would like to build a well-constructed school for their children.

What have they done so far?
In 2013 VBC, a small organization of Haitians, wanted to help the children in this region by building a primary school. VBC’s funds were limited, so, with the help of the parents, they built a small school with banana leaf walls. All was well until the building collapsed in the rainy season. It was rebuilt in a more protected area, but the school is slowly deteriorating.

VBC decided they should build a permanent school with a good foundation and strong construction. They bought a piece of land and plans were made. The school will include six classrooms, an office, and a bathroom. They have raised over $13,000 to date and have put in the foundation. We have decided to set up this GoFundMe on behalf of VBC to raise $20,000 to complete the second phase of construction. This will support building three classrooms and allow them to open the school for teaching.

Who is managing this project?
VBC was founded after the earthquake in 2010 by Oliancy Charles and Francky Louis, local Haitian residents. The organization provides community support in the poorest regions of this district through a variety of projects for peasant women and children. By working together lives of the poorest in this area are transformed and basic human rights become a reality.
100% of the money will go directly to the building of this school and receipts will be tracked. Parents and other community volunteers are helping with this work. A generous donor has agreed to cover the GoFundMe fees so we can share all the money we raise. We will be able to visit the school during frequent visits to Haiti and can share news of progress.

Why do we want to help?
Oliancy and Francky are old friends we met when visiting Haiti. They are kind hardworking people who volunteer their time to help their neighbors. Most of the people in Didier are peasant farmers who struggle from day to day to provide for their families. They are acting on their aspiration of educating their children and we share the value placed on education. It strengthens the people and the country. These people are striving to improve their lives but have very limited resources so we want to help. Join us!

Please help build this school by donating and sharing their story with your friends on Facebook. Any size donation is welcome and much appreciated. An amount of money that may not be of consequence to us can make a difference in a country where most people live on less than $2.00 a day.
