Gregory needs help.
On June 23rd, Gregory went to a dentist thinking he had TMJ. Unfortunately, things escalated quickly, and we now know this pain was actually caused by a tumor that had grown just under his left ear on his jaw bone. After a biopsy, we found out the tumor was cancerous and he was diagnosed with Stage IV Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC). All of this happened within a matter of days.
ACC is diagnosed in about 1,200 new cases each year and afflicts about 10,000 patients in the United States, so there is not extensive research and funding for this more rare cancer. ACC’s progression is typically gradual and sometimes relentless. The disease has a tendency to grow along nerves. As a result he will need extensive surgery by the end of the month. Because his ACC is located on his facial nerve he may lose it during surgery. If he does, half of his face will be left paralyzed. No chemotherapies or targeted drugs have been approved for ACC, so he will have to endure radiation.
Gregory is a fighter, however this journey is going to be incredibly difficult, and I know many family and friends have asked how they can help. As a freelancer, he was in between health insurance policies and never expected anything like this to happen at age 31. He will be enduring not only the physical pain of the surgery and radiation but the emotional weight of the hospital bills he will be incurring without insurance.
