Help Fight for Medicaid!

Women’s March Minnesota is fundraising to help cover the cost for our board member, Bekah to travel to DC with the Women’s March Disability Caucus and advocates from states across the US to fight for Medicaid.

Medicaid is essential for disabled people to go about living their lives because it’s the only healthcare option that covers almost all expenses that can come with living as a disabled person. Without it, it leaves hundreds of disabled people without the ability to live independently.

Currently it is a poverty trap, due to the fact you need to make 100%-200% of the Federal poverty limit to qualify for Medicaid if you are disabled depending on the state

Trump has set up the ability for states to use waivers to restrict coverage of Medicaid, waivers being a part of section 1115 of the Social Security Act that allow states to deviate from numerous different requirements under the federal law. The previous administration used waivers as a way to increase coverage and services, and block waivers that would restrict and shrink Medicaid in states. This means that some states can restrict who receives these benefits.

In the current administration, Medicaid is under attack due to the fact many republicans want to add a work requirement to qualify for Medicaid if not receiving SSI cash. This is almost half of all disabled people on Medicaid under the age of 65. Of that, most are not working 20 or more hours per week. Most states that are now pushing for this are pushing for at least 80 hours per month to qualify for Medicaid. Many of these people are unable to work due to the limitations of their disability, and can leave many without healthcare, hence no way to work anyway.

In all: Income qualification for medicaid has to be increased/dismantled in order to end poverty cycles, waivers must be prevented from restricting medicaid, work requirements should be blocked, and our citizens insured. There are numerous other reasons to support medicaid which are not listed here, since it’s vital to numerous populations. Medicaid saves lives and is a right for low-income people/families/children and the disability community, a moral obligation, and not an option.
