Train Teachers and Give Children A Better Future

Imagine if you couldn't access education. Imagine how that would affect your future? In Malawi there are 10's of 1000's of primary school children desperate to learn, desperate to improve life chances for themselves and their families. But with classroom sizes in excess of 100 pupils and teachers working with barely any resources and limited availability to training and professional development, raising the standard of education is a difficult goal.

The CharChar Trust is a UK based charity that aims to improve literacy levels in Malawi to help young people to access better education and opportunities in life. Working through the CharChar Trust, Natalie Conti helps support volunteer teachers via weekly visits to offer CPD, teaching inspiration and supplementary recourses.

Cue The Music Magic...

On October 1st 2018, Natalie received an email from one of these volunteer teachers asking what advice she might have for leading phonemic activities with 6-year-old children learning English as a second language. After researching online, Natalie found Boogie Mites, a UK organisation that trains teachers how to use interactive music activities to promote language and literacy skills. Natalie was inspired by the YouTube videos of our songs in action and loved the idea of using music to build strong foundations for literacy.

"Malawi is a very musically gifted nation, yet teachers rarely see the importance of music, song and rhythm as a teaching and learning tool."

The video you can see here shows how one volunteer teacher adapted what she saw our YouTube channel to create a more engaging and effective style of teaching, creating drums and beaters from materials at hand to help tap out word rhythms.

“Malawian primary school teachers are under a huge amount of pressure.”

Natalie realised that if watching just one video could bring such positive benefits to teachers's moral, confidence and methods,  how much more transformational it would be if Boogie Mites trainers could come to Malawi and train groups of teachers face-to-face. So she got in touch to ask if we could bring a team of Boogie Mites trainers to Malawi, and help inspire teachers to use these music based teaching methods in their own classes.

Together, the CharChar Trust and Boogie Mites Can Make A Real Difference

Together we can provide teachers in Malawi with the training and resources they need to improve language and literacy skills and give children the opportunity to create a better future.

But we can’t do this alone. We need your support to bring positive change to teaching methods and change lives. Our aim is to raise £7500 in order to fund 2 of the Boogie Mites team to work with teachers and children in Malawi from May 11 to 25th 2019.

Legacy

Boogie Mites are committed to creating a project with a long-lasting legacy. Therefore, your contribution will also fund teaching/ training resource packs and solar-powered technology to enable volunteer teachers to cascade the training throughout the community.
