Let me start by thanking you for taking time to read my sister's story!! My prayer is that it will educate you on this debilitating disease known as "Lyme Disease". It is known as the "silent" disease as its victims appear normal on the outside while inside they are suffering beyond what we can imagine!!!
My sister Debby was diagnosed with Late Stage Neurological Lyme Disease in 2009 through a "positive" blood test. For several years she was bedridden with severe fatigue, pain, brain fog, cognitive issues and internal tremoring. She has spent the last ten years doing both traditional and alternative medicine to fight this horrible disease. Many of you have followed her journey through her Facebook updates and a blog she wrote during one of her stays at an alternative clinic.
In 2016 her neurological symptoms worsened. New symptoms began to appear. She had trouble swallowing and the internal tremoring became worse. She decided to investigate a more traditional approach. She flew to Washington DC to meet with one of the top Lyme doctors in the country. His protocol was extremely aggressive with a cost of $50,000 plus.
Her local doctor was concerned with these serious symptoms so he referred her to a local infectious disease doctor who immediately put her on IV Rocephin for 4 months. She had some improvement with her symptoms but due to this very strong antibiotic, had to have her gallbladder out. In addition, she developed pancreatitis. Due to this she was no longer a candidate for IV antibiotics.
In the beginning of 2018 she seemed to be doing better. She was having some good days and even able to get out and have a social life again. It seemed as though maybe she was finally beating this disease. Unfortunately, this was short lived. By the end of June her symptoms began to skyrocket. She currently spends 90% of her days in bed. She does all she can to grocery shop, cook and get her 15 year old son to school, church and all of his activities. Even these simple tasks have become a challenge.
I want to pause and share that after 30 years of marriage my sister went through a very difficult divorce. Not having the support of a husband has proven to be so very hard and she is having to make these difficult medical decisions on her own. With that said, she is one of the strongest people I know! Her courage to fight this disease has been more than admirable!!! She is still believing that she will win her fight with Lyme Disease.
After much prayer and speaking to her family, she has decided to seek treatment at Lifeworks Wellness Clinic in Clearwater, Florida. Her stay there will be two to three months. People from all over the world have gone to see Dr. Minkoff. He treats cancer, Lyme and other autoimmune disorders. There are many testimonials of patients who were sick for 20 years and got their life back. This is not a quick fix. There are many layers that need to be healed. We feel that she needs to get there as soon as possible. With the help of myself, her two daughters and friends she has made sure that her son will be taken care of while she is gone.
Her biggest need is financial. Traditional insurance does not cover the cost that she will incur. We are hoping to raise $40,000 to help her with the cost that is outlined below.
