About 60 days ago, my brother, who is 49, a single father, self-employed construction business owner, very physically active and healthy, had his life come crashing down around him.
He started to work on the job site, and collapsed, with what appeared to be the signs of a stroke. He was taken to the hospital with slurred speech, paralysis, muscle spasms, severe muscle cramping, and horrific pain.
Tests were run, but nothing conclusive was determined. My brother was referred to a neurologist who told him he was “normal”, and who scheduled tests for him at the end of JULY!
and a follow-up in DECEMBER!
We have decided that this isn’t soon enough, or help enough, for what seems to be a motor-neuron disease, (according to the preliminary hospital evaluation) which is very time-sensitive, and with potentially grave outcome.
We will be traveling to seek a diagnosis and treatment, as he is receiving inadequate care locally.
In the meantime, Daniel is unable to work, write, walk or stand for more than a few minutes at a time, has constant tremors, pain, and spasms in his extremities, partial paralysis, difficulties swallowing and breathing, and his excellent vision has deteriorated to the point that he can’t even read very large font. He is constantly exhausted to the point of collapse, and struggling with the basic day to day things we all need to be able to do.
At this point, I am reaching out to all of you,
because we are at the end of our mental and financial rope. My brother has been unable to work since his collapse, and his funds have run out completely. He is uninsured, and has applied for Medicaid and Social Security Disability, but those take time, precious time, which he doesn’t have, and he has children he is trying to support and take care of as well.
