Help Cheryl Get Her Arm Back

For those of you that don't know, in 2014 Cheryl had an aneurysm rupture in her brain. Against all odds she survived. Unfortunately, a week later she suffered a severe stroke that, for lack of a better term, wiped her completely clean. For over a year, we had ourselves a "zombie Cheryl" that had moments of lucidity for short periods of time.

Luckily she came back to us out of the blue. It was then that we found out she was half blind in each eye and deaf. The good news is that, with a great deal of work, she has become completely mobile. She can walk, she can get up, she can move on her own.

But the work isn't over yet and that's where YOU come in.

We are doing our best to try to get Cheryl as much independence as possible. Sadly, one of Cheryl's ailments is that she's lost the ability to use her left arm.

The good news is that there's a device that can help!

The bad news is that insurance won't cover it and it's not cheap.

So we're asking for help to pay for it. If we can raise the 3500 bucks required to buy it, we can get the device, put her back in therapy and hopefully have Cheryl regain just a bit of her life back.

Cheryl has had so many improvements since getting her device. It's been amazing to watch. Here's just a couple of things...

A few months ago, Cheryl wasn't able to bend over and pick up a plate. I even included a video of the whole ordeal. (You can check it out HERE.) That entire video is obsolete now. I’ve seen her bend over to pick up socks, pieces of paper, her shoes and the towel she always carries with her. Not only that, but it takes her no time at all. She doesn’t have to think about it, she just does it. It took almost four years for her to able to just pick something up off the ground.

Speaking of her shoes, she’s also fairly capable of putting on her shoes now. She’s not always successful, but she gets pretty damn close. Not only do we live in a world where she’s leaving the apartment herself and wandering around, but we also live in a world where she’s picking up her shoes and putting them, on before going out.

Early on on Cheryl's in home rehab, we were trying to find things that she used to do that she loved. Something that could trigger automatic responses. One of the things we came up with was bowling. Back in the day, Cheryl was quite the bowler and was even on a league eons ago.

The results were hardly what we expected. We got her to throw the ball a few times on her own, but even  on her best of days she lost interest after like the third frame.

Eventually we sort of gave on trying because she just wasn't into it. Well, not that we have our social circle, we were looking for something to do and bowling came up. The neighbor, along with her daughter, went bowling with Cheryl and I.

This time, not only was she in to it, but she was trying to teach the daughter AND played all ten frames with zero problems!

The last time I updated everyone, I mentioned that the ball had started rolling on getting Cheryl's device. Well, we got it!

Cheryl's left arm had an incredible amount of tone in it, which basically meant that it was locked up tight. While she had a small amount of movement in her shoulder, she was unable to stretch her arm completely out.

In order for her to regain the use of that arm, we need to get that arm loosened up and the device will help with that.

After reaching out to the sales rep and nailing down the particulars, the device was sent overnight and we quickly made an appointment to learn how to use it and program it with the field rep.

The next day we started using it and to say there was a learning curve is putting it mildly. In the beginning, she was so stiff that it hurt putting the device on and off because I would have to manipulate her arm to get it on properly.

Luckily, we've gotten it down pat and it cause her a slight pinching, but it's way easier now. She's been using it about 2 weeks now and it's been going great. Her arm is doing more. She now goes for daily walks, has been brace enough to go out walking alone and even got herself back in the kitchen!

It's been a pure joy to watch.

We're so close to getting this thing completely paid off and could really use your help to spread the word. We're so close to our goal. Any donation, no matter how small, would be amazing! And thank if if you for your continued support!!

On Wednesday of this week, Cheryl was reevaluated on the device. It has been a year since she tested it, and while the test went well, a lot of things have changed for Cheryl.

It was important to retest her before spending the whopping 3500 dollars.

The good news is that the retest went great. It looks like it's going to do great with loosening Cheryl's arm and letting her start the process of re-incorporating it into every day life.

We're moving forward and could use your help to make it happen!
