Who am I? My name is Cătălina Frâncu and I am a Romanian-born future architect.
What do I do? I am an architecture student with too many passions for my own good :) and I want to continue my studies. I graduated first in my class in my fourth year of university in Romania, and then I decided to have a break to figure out my future. I took a gap year, moved to Spain and worked as a tour guide and as an English teacher to raise money for the next year of university. I decided that this time I was going to Paris because architecture requires knowledge, experimentation and a broad culture and this is what Paris meant to me. This city inspires me in my photography, filmmaking, graphic design and sketching. It is a tough city for a newcomer but I believe I can soften it up in time.
What do I need? I am here now and I need your help. My savings covered the first months of rent and part of the moving costs (the other part was covered by my ever caring mum). I need 4000€ for my rent this year. Up until now, it was she who helped me, but I realise that from this moment on, 500€ per month is like asking for the impossible. This is why I ask you to help me relieve her of this burden and fund my architecture studies.
Why do I need it? I have dreamt about expanding my horizon since I was a little girl. I didn’t really understand what that meant but I reckoned it had to do with “far” and “knowledge”. Later I came to understand the phrase. Although it is sometimes seen as a cliché, I invested it with real meaning. Through these two experiences abroad – working in Spain and learning in France – I became more tolerant, less afraid, kinder and less arrogant. I am ever curious, strong and determined.
While being an architecture student back home, I felt something was missing. It was the travel and learning through experience. Le Corbusier travelled the world to find his way in the field and I cannot imagine what he would have been without his pilgrimage. I ask for the same thing. The possibility to learn from other cultures so as to become the best practitioner I can be.
