Maxwell is just 2 years old and has always been a happy, healthy and active boy. In December he became ill and after numerous visits to the doctor and hospital he continued to decline. On January 16th he suffered a series of seizures and a cardiac event leaving him on life support. Mom (Katria Nieves) has not left the hospital to date. Dad (Marvin Bell) has been commuting from Greenport to Stony Brook daily as well as caring for their other two children who are 3 years and 6 months old. Both of Maxwell's parents are unable to work due to these heart breaking circumstances. With no income currently coming in the funds raised will help to pay for rent, utility bills, heat, food, diapers, formula as well as the many other expenses that will come their way during this trying time. Your support will be greatly appreciated by this young family in their time of need.

I don't think I could ever express how proud I am of my boy, Maxwell. He is truly where I get my strength from. I wouldn't be able to do it on my own.

Today neurology will be reading the results from the MRI to see if there is additional brain damage from his second cardiac arrest on Monday. I have also requested results from a culture that was drawn of his phlegm to see if there is still pneumonia in his lungs. Due to him aspirating his formula into his lungs the Peds team is trying to administer a feeding tube past the stomach and directly into his intestines to prevent him from choking again. But of course the ONLY machine in the hospital is broken, so an xray has to be done to make sure the tube is placed in the right position. My baby is still shaking and talk of what to do about his intubation has yet to be addressed. It's all so scary because he has been through too much. And now there is a pop up seizure scan being done. His health is so compromised that having broken machines and just guessing on what's the next best move is worrisome.

I have educated myself on all of these machines, their inaccuracies/accuracy, what the numbers/lines mean, all the medical terminology/language and so much more. I'm fighting this battle right along with my baby.. This hospital has already taken one of my babies from me.. I'll be damned if they take another one! Mommy's got you Max!! We're going to get through this one way or another!!

I want to thank everyone for your prayers, donations, support and advice during this difficult time. My family is forever grateful to you all.

Update: Maxwell is still intubated but my boy is finally breathing on his own!!!!!!!!!!!! Tomorrow the Drs will attempt to remove his tube if he maintains his current breathing rate all day and this evening. So please pray for his strength to get through the procedure. After the tube is removed he will then need surgery to have a GI bag administered because he will still be unable to eat on his own. His brain activity is slow and I have witnessed more seizure like episodes. The Neuro team here is looking into what they are and how to treat them. We are still unaware of his physical capabilities but I have so much faith that my boy will do well with future physical and occupational therapy. He's still considered to be in critical condition but I am so hopeful and optimistic because my boy is strong beyond amazement!

Last week this day was nowhere in sight for me. Maxwell has exceeded everyone's expectations; especially the Drs!!! I fought so hard to stay on top of them. I questioned everything and everyone. I will never stop fighting for my boy. We are in this together. Now please please please, I beg of you to pray he gets through these procedures tomorrow. I swear all of your prayers are what got us this far!! I am so thankful and have never cried so many tears of joy in my life!!! Thank you Jesus!!!!!!!

An update from Mom 1/25 - Yesterday Maxwell opened his eyes for an extended amount of time and now he smiles when we talk to him!!!! After witnessing all that his little body endured first hand; seeing him smile just made my heart melt. It really puts everything into perspective for me and has truly taught me to never take ANYTHING for granted.
He is still on the ventilator and has been handling the decreasing of levels really well.

With the type of brain damage he has suffered he will have to learn how to eat, walk, talk, move all of his limbs - literally everything that has to do with moving any part of the body. He has also acquired secondary infections. His tiny body has been through so much trauma and we still don't know the severity of it all.

There has also been conversation of having to travel upstate to a inpatient rehab facility. I am preparing to uproot my entire family to ensure the best chance for a full recovery for our boy.

There are so many uncertainties. It's really all a matter of seeing what he is capable of and what he isn't. One things for certain is my baby is a fighter and his will to push through has inspired me in so many ways. He is my super hero. Thank you to everyone that has provided any kind of support. It's truly appreciated. Please keep praying for my baby

An update from Mom last night 1/21/19 - "The amount of support and generosity from you all literally gives me chills. Thank you so very much to all you for sharing the GoFundMe page and your donations. You have no idea what it means to my family and I.. To update you all: This morning I was told by the Dr that if Max's breathing does not improve by the end of the week that he will need a tracheostomy. That we will be here for months most likely and then he will be transferred to St. Charles for inpatient rehabilitation for the brain damage.. I know they are trying to prepare me for the worst but every day is a damn emotional rollercoaster. I am trying remain strong for my baby and will continue to fight for him so that he can have the strength to get better. It just hurts so bad cus I just want my baby back. He is strong as hell and I know we will get through this one way or another..my kids are my world and I'll do whatever it takes for them. Keep fighting Max! Everyone keep my family in your prayers. Hopefully one day this will all be just a distant memory... "
