Help Adan's family get back on their feet!

Donation protected
On behalf of my dear friend and “Papito” (dad) Adan Amaya, I’m starting a fundraiser to help support his wife, Reina’s, recovery. Reina, who was previously a bus driver for the Rialto Unified School District for 15 years, was recently diagnosed with a rare, severe skin disorder (pemphigus vulgaris). Reina has since quit her job and has been hospitalized for medical treatment. Adan had to suspend his work to take care of Reina full time. Although their insurance covers part of the treatment, all the medical and personal expenses incurred have placed a heavy financial burden on the Amayas, a humble family that has lost both sources of their income.

Adan has been working with the mail service at Pomona College for the past 10 years and was awarded Employee of the Year in 2018. Much loved among students, faculty and staff members, his kindness and optimism have positively impacted so many in the community. A frequent visitor at the Oldenborg Center for Foreign Languages, he has bonded with many students and patiently helped them practice their Spanish. Over the years, he has warmly embraced many, especially international students who are far away from home, as “hijos & hijas” (sons & daughters). I’m proud and lucky to call him my “Papito”!

I am a Pomona alum '18 and am originally from Foshan, China. I met Adan in 2014 when I started learning Spanish and attending Spanish table at Oldenborg. One of the most caring and inspiring individuals I know, Adan has been a fatherly figure to me, far beyond the “papá” “hijo” nicknames. Through good and bad times, he has stood by me: rushing to my rescue when my car broke down in the middle of nowhere, listening attentively and offering life advice when I was low, and even inviting me to spend Christmas with his family in El Salvador. I’m thankful to have found a home away from home through Adan and my “Mamita” Reina.

Having been married for 29 years, Adan and Reina are a loving couple that has shown faith and resilience through thick and thin. They fled a bloody civil war in El Salvador three decades ago to start a new life in the US, and now they’re facing yet another tough battle ahead. Please join me in supporting the Amayas in their fight. No amount is too small, and all donations will go towards Reina’s rehab costs, including medicine costs (not covered by insurance) and personal expenses (transportation and housing while Adan has relocated to LA to stay by Reina). Your help is truly appreciated. Thank you!

Together, we can be the light for Adan and Reina :)
