My name is Lucia Alvarez, and I am a senior at the National Agrarian University (UNA) of Nicaragua, majoring in Veterinary Medicine.
I’m honored that for the upcoming fall semester, I was chosen for a competitive interchange program in the one of the best universities of veterinary sciences in Europe: the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. However, my country, Nicaragua, has been experiencing a social and economic crisis the last three months. As a students, We LOST OUR 2018 academic year and we do not know if we are going back to classes yet , because we are afraid of suffering any kind of disturbance .
I have participated in and volunteered for several international organizations to alleviate animal suffering, such as World Vets and Casa Lupita in Nicaragua. I have also assisted rural communities and farmers to improve their economies and seek a way out of poverty. In addition, I have been awarded for academic excellence and am involved in universities activities to help animals in needy communities in Nicaragua’s capital.
The program covers tuition, fees, and health insurance, but my scholarship does not cover other costs, such as room and board and personal expenses; in order to get a Swedish student visa I must demonstrate I have $5,500 dollars in my account, which is meant to cover these expenses.https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Studying-in-Sweden/Universities-and-university-college.html Because of the economic crisis that goes hand-in-hand with the political unrest, it is impossible for me to gather this amount in such a short time, and it would be heartbreaking not to be able to participate.
Veterinary Sciences at SLU rank 7th in the world. If the opportunity is given, I will be the first exchange student from the National Agrarian University of Nicaragua to participate, and the first of my family members to receive this educational opportunity. I have put a lot of hard work and effort into my professional formation since I enrolled at the UNA and I will be an honor to have such experience.
I humbly ask for your help with anything you can. This opportunity will plant the seed that helps gain new experience and valuable future opportunities that someday will allow me to open the non-profit veterinary clinic of my dreams

También ayudé a comunidades rurales y agricultores a mejorar sus economías y buscar una salida a la pobreza. Además, me han otorgado la excelencia académica y estoy involucrado en actividades universitarias para ayudar a los animales en las comunidades necesitadas de la capital de Nicaragua.
