Help A Historian Finish His PhD!

Hi! My name is Joseph, and I’m a grad student! You might be wondering who I am and why am I asking for your help. Well, I’m originally from Northern Ontario from a small town by the name of Chapleau. But now, I am currently living in Québec City, studying at Laval University to pursue a career as a professional historian.

You can learn more about my research in this three-minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXr5L0wfYE8

Recently, I’ve had a string of bad luck. Two years ago, my wonderful mother Maria developed brain cancer. When she became sick, I travelled many, many times between provinces to help care for her. I’m sad to say that after nearly a year and a half of battling cancer, my mother did not survive and passed away not long ago.

However, as I’m currently I’m finishing my thesis on what little I have left of my savings, I realize the time and money I’ve spent on travelling back and forth between school and home to care for my mother might prevent me from finishing my work on time this year. Though obtaining a doctoral degree takes 6 to 7 years on average to finish, I no longer have access to student loans.

I’m on my last year of my PhD program as I am currently editing my thesis. But this step takes time, as I am also finishing the final touches in research as well. I estimate I need two more semesters (summer and fall) to finish editing, to submit, and finally, to defend my work. Once all this is finished, I can finally earn my degree and start looking for an academic job.

Ever since I’ve left my hometown for my education, I’ve been active everywhere I’ve been, sharing my love of history both in Canada and the U.S. I enjoy interacting with people and helping them learn more about history, in both French and English. My goal in life is not only to become a university professor, but also to be a public educator at large.

And being so close to my goal, I’ve decided to swallow my pride and ask for help: your help. And like we say in French, “qui ne fait rien, n’a rien”: Who doesn’t try anything, doesn’t get anything. Hopefully, thanks to your generosity, I will able to complete my degree this year. My goal amount covers my expenses for two semesters, which includes my living expenses, school fees, and an amount to help me travel for job interviews across the country.

So if you believe in education, if you love history, and want to help a student out, please donate as much or as little as you want, every bit helps me have a little more time to write. Please join my GoFundMe and help me become an educator and make a difference!

 En français:

Bonjour!
