Help 4 Queer Women (and 1 Cat) Move

Donation protected
Hello, together we’re Mia (@OhMiaGod ), Loretta (@SuparRaytar ), Laura (@LaurakBuzz ), Tilley (@GatheringTilley ) and Smudge (the cat).

We’re four queer women (and a cat) who have landed in a tricky situation.

Recently, we were told to imminently expect a 2 month eviction notice. This was a complete surprise and not something we were even remotely prepared for, especially because we had just renewed our contract to stay another 6 months. But as the landlord has decided to sell our place, we have to get out ASAP, whether we’re ready or not.

After scrambling to find a replacement home, we found the perfect house. It’s located nearby, costs almost the same and is even a little bigger. We jumped on the chance to take it and were thankfully told we’ve got it.

Then we found out how much it was going to cost. Immediately we had to pay a hefty agency fee, which we only managed to pay thanks to a parental loan. But that still leaves behind a list of other fees which we have nervously realised we cannot afford.

The problem comes from the fact that not only does this place require a much larger deposit than we expected, we’re also having to pay the new rent upfront on top of the remaining rent for our current place. We’re in the process of trying to negotiate down our time left and rent due for our current home, but even if we’re successful, it’s still nowhere near going to cover the money we need to find. Likewise we can’t get our deposit back on this place until we’ve moved out, which we can’t do until we’ve paid the new fees.

As a house of 4, young, queer women, where one of us is disabled, another is a student, and there’s a spread of mental illnesses between us, it won’t be much of a surprise to learn we often struggle with money. Once we’re settled into our new place, we’re confident we can work out how to make things work, month to month, like we have for this past year. But we simply can’t afford these initial fees and make this house move work on our own.

So we’ve decided to ask for help. We do this reluctantly, after discussing at length whether we felt it was fair to do this, but we simply do not have another choice. If we don’t find the money in 3 weeks, then this whole thing falls through and we’ll be left with less than a month before eviction day. That’s a scenario for which we have no backup plan, this is our only route out of this.

It’s important to us to be transparent, so the breakdown of what we need is:

£1195 - Rent due on day 1

£1650 - Deposit (humans)

£200 - Deposit (cat)

£152 - Crowdfunding fees

As mentioned above, thanks to a parental loan, we’ve already paid the agency fee so that’s not factored into our total. Also not included is the remaining rent on our current place, as the plan is that the money from this month’s work should cover that as normal, with our negotiated discount for leaving early covering our moving costs.

Even if you’re not able to chip in, thank you for reading!
