Heavy Rains in Malawi

Donation protected
My dad inspired me to collect money to help victims of flooding in Malawi.

As some of you know, I went to there for Christmas 2018 and New Years Eve and I loved it.
I was welcomed very well everywhere by locals and fell in love with the country and the malawians.

My tales from Malawi have resonnated in my dad's heart and he inspired me to create this money pot.

There has been heavy rains in malawi and houses and crops have been destroyed. Many have lost everything and this will have a long-lasting effect on the area because so many crops were lost.

My dad sent me a message this weekend to tell me that he was moved by how I was welcomed in Malawi and how difficult it is to thank the locals as he would like to for having treated me so well.
He said he could not stay indifferent to the news of heavy rains and floodings and disasters happening in Malawi right now and that he wanted to donate some money so I could help at least one family I have met there.
My dad donated 50 euros and apologized by saying it is not much, but everyone helps as they can.

"J'ai été très sensible à la gentillesse, au bon accueil et à l'hospitalité que tu as trouvés partout. Difficile de les en remercier comme on voudrait. Pour ne pas rester indifférent, et si tu connais là-bas quelqu'un victime des intempéries, je t'enverrai 50 € pour que tu puisses le(s) secourir. C'est bien peu, je sais bien, mais, comme le colibri d'une légende amérindienne, chacun aide comme il peut."
Having my dad write this melted my heart. ❤️

I thought it was so generous and it inspired me to collect some funds.

I contacted a hostel owner and she gave me the following news of her area:

"It was raining 4 days non-stop resulting in collapsing walls, so many people in the region lost their crops and (part of) their houses. We had 9 staff members with damage and Paka lost a summerhut. Nothing serious and we are grateful that the biggest storm passed us, and our thoughts are with the people who lost everything. It will have a long-lasting effect on the area because so many crops were lost.

Yesterday we donated 40 mosquito nets, soap and wooden spoons and serving spoons for nsima plus lots of bags of clothes. We’d like to do that again: there is a big need for nets, baby/children clothes and kitchen stuff. We also partly fund the damage of all our staff’s houses.

We hope to get enough money to bring more nets and other things people need. All help is very much appreciated! Especially because we are aware that there will be hunger in the region."

All the money collected would go for nets, clothes, kitchen supplies and helping restoring houses.
I will transfer the funds to the owner of Pakachere Backpackers via Western Union and she will take care of everything there.

A little bit of help is already a lot!
Thanks for participating.❤️

About me: I'm Iris, 25 year old from Finland who went to Malawi in December and truly understood why it was called the warm heart of Africa.
I met Annelies, the owner of Pakachere Backpackers in Zomba at my first stop in Malawi. I got to meet a lot of locals in Malawi and have kept in touch with many of them. I was always welcomed very well everywhere.
