The Heard ‘Em Say Poetry Slam Team was created to identify, cultivate and exhibit exemplary teen poets from the Tampa Bay area in the regional, national and international youth poetry slam landscape. The team is committed to developing strong and creative writing with an emphasis on innovative, energetic and polished presentations. The Heard ‘Em Say Poetry Slam Team is designed to function as an extension of the show (adhering to show guidelines) and to represent Tampa Bay’s flourishing talent base of young, modern-day griots!
These youth have been assembled to represent the Central Florida region in the premiere youth poetry slam landscape called Brave New Voices!
Brave New Voices (BNV) is an international youth poetry festival created by Youth Speaks, Inc in 1998 after the inaugural Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam in San Francisco—the first poetry slam dedicated to youth in the nation’s history. Since that time, Brave New Voices has grown to represent youth from all across the United States. BNV also features International teams from Canada, Africa, the Polynesian Islands, and Europe, making it the largest and most diverse ongoing spoken word event in the world!
To attend and compete at BNV, teams must apply online at bravenewvoices.org. This year's competition which is being held in Houston, TX from July 18th-22nd will feature more than 50 teams from around the world!
Our expenses include:
Festival registration costs, which covers: lodging, 2 meals a day, local transportation, event tickets, and access to all events. Team registration cost is $3,000 and covers 6 team members (students) and 4 coaches (adult chaperones). The team registration fee is due by Tuesday, May 1st.
Transportation to BNV: Roundtrip flights to Houston, TX are currently around $350 per person (Southwest). Total estimated cost for 6 teens plus 4 adults is $3,500*. Southwest also offers 2 free checked bags. We are also exploring the option of renting a van for sightseeing during our last day in the Houston Area. The estimated cost of this is $200*. We would like to purchase our tickets ASAP to avoid significance increases in price.

Incidental Fees: 1 meal per day and spending money is estimated at a cost of $200.00 per person, which is due by prior to departure.
