In developing countries like India 2-3 students per thousand in the age group 10-16 years are affected by rheumatic heart disease (RHD). In a country with a population of 1.2 billion and, with 15% of the population in the age group 10-16 years, there are about half a million students with RHD. Many of them are not aware of their heart disease and have significant suffering and also sometimes premature death.
Healthy Heart Initiave is a nonprofit organization with focus on cardiovacular health awareness among school children and communities, early detection of various risk factors and amelioration of morbidity and mortlaity.
This summmer we are going to survey 10,000 students in the district of West Midnapore, India to promote their awareness about RHD and to develop a survery based screening tool to help in early diagnosis and thus encourage self-referral. This tool, we believe, will help reducing the burden of RHD in the world.
