"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have."
-Winston Churchill (War Speeches: From June 25, 1941 to September 6, 1943 (ed. 1953)

In the United States of America more money is spent on healthcare per capita than any other Western nation. Why then do we continue to have some of the worst outcomes dealing with chronic disease, even when compared with some third world countries? As with human disease itself, we will see that the key to resolving our current healthcare crisis is in tracing from cause to effect...

We need your assistance to complete this important documentary project. Please consider how you can help!

Sincerely,

Ron Meinhardt

The History of Healing, Part 1 (based upon some of the content discussed in the documentary)

Over two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ stood up against spiritual oppression, despotism, and… medical malpractice. The following essay elucidates this lesser known component of Christianity: the history of Christian healing...

During His sojourn on earth, Christ saw multitudes around Him sick and suffering from diseases of body, mind, and spirit. But what must have caused the most anguish of soul was to witness the habits of the physicians of the day. Of these avaricious practitioners the philosopher Cato (234-149 B.C.) once said:

"The race of Greeks is very vicious; and, my son, believe this as the voice of an oracle, that, with its literature, it will spoil everything at Rome. It will be worse still if it sends us its physicians. They have sworn among themselves to kill all other nations with their medicines. They exercise their art for the sake of gain, and seek to get our confidence in order to be able to poison us the more easily. Remember, my son, that I charge you to have nothing to do with physicians.”

Christ stretched forth His hands to touch the untouchable, and heal the unhealable- all the while showing that He was not acting solely upon financial incentives but rather was moved by compassion, generosity, and love. His modalities were chosen from the simple things of nature, which presented a stark contrast to the mystical mineral and animal-based concoctions, or Pharmakeia, of the majority of His contemporaries. Sadly many of the people actually rejected Christ's methods because they seemed too innocuous. Pliny (A.D. 23-79) describes the desire of the general populace as such:

"People lose confidence in what is intelligible to them. Even the few Romans who studied medicine thought it necessary to write their prescriptions in Greek, because if they should attempt to treat the disease in any other language, they would certainly lose all credit, even with the ignorant who did not know a word of Greek.”

Instead of keeping His subjects in ignorance regarding their disease, Christ connected intelligible practical instructions to avoid illness when He admonished those recently recovered to “go and sin no more.” Thus the concept of population-based "primary prevention" was an integral part of His philosophy of health (and, as an aside, unfortunately the most neglected aspect of modern healthcare).

Thus, we see two divergent systems of healing: the one providing non-toxic, low-cost, easily accessible, and compassionate care vs. the profiteering, poisonous, and bombastic form of medicine that came as a result of Hellenization (the conquest of Greek thought and culture over all others).

At His command (Mark 16:15-18, Luke 9:2, Luke 10:9) Christ’s disciples took His methodology into all the inhabitable globe, and great was the relief brought to suffering humanity. Eventually, we find those of the Hellenized philosophy rallied together to create guilds of physicians (or labor unions) who worked to protect their interests and combat opposing medical sects (reported in History of Medicine by Alexander Wilder, 1901). Pagan temples of healing, such as the Asclepeions, also rebelled against this new wave of benevolently-minded healers. Persecutions were levied against the offenders. These healers were thrown to the lions, sawn asunder, horribly tortured, and zealously maligned. Surprisingly though, the movement continued to flourish. People began to understand true healing: what it meant to be made whole… and it led them to honor and venerate the One who was its source- not a few were led to embrace the gospel of Christ.

Finding that they could do nothing to stay the movement's advance, priests, statesmen, physicians, and philosophers collaborated to disguise their former ways and appear to join these reformers who were "turning the world upside-down." The old pagan temples of healing became “healing shrines of the saints” and multitudes were led to believe the pernicious ways of the old school practitioners were now in harmony with those of the reformers. But there were groups of Christians who never gave in to this deception. They retained their purity by keeping the Holy Scriptures as the standard of principle by which to discern truth from error.

For centuries they practiced a system of faith and healing that was used to carry the gospel message to lands far and near. Finding their deceptions unveiled by these primitive Christians, the Roman Catholic hierarchy was aroused to resist and relentlessly persecute these "dissenters." Though there were probably bands of these Gospel Medical Missionaries all over the world, the most famous were the Waldensian Christians of Northern Italy (see video above).
