Heart of Horse Sense Program Pairs Combat Veterans with Special Needs Horses 
Sally and Dollface are rescue horses who had rough starts and will be receiving several months of rehabilitation from Heart of Horse Sense with compassion, care and training at the hands of Combat Veterans, Meadows Town Ranch's Richard Knapp, and Heart of Horse Sense volunteers. This is an evolution of last year's "Healing the Wild Bunch" effort that involved three wild rescue horses that we helped transition to adoptable, productive lives.
Heart of Horse Sense supports equine assisted psychotherapy to Veterans and At-Risk Youth in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. The services we support are life-changing, and can even be life-saving for those dealing with PTSD, for whom other therapies have not worked. Our opening video shows a little about our work with Veterans.
The skills our Combat Veterans will use for initial gentling put into practice natural horsemanship techniques - the same skills they are learning as they face challenges in life outside of the military.
What We Need
We need your help to cover the care, feeding, housing and training of these sensitive, special needs horses and others like them, for the six months it will likely take to help them be ready for adoption. It costs around $650+/- per horse per month for basic needs and for supervised therapeutic time with veterans and others. We are hoping to cover these costs while some of our Veterans continue the rehabilitation work that has just scratched the surface of each horse’s potential.

Though Heart of Horse Sense supports equine assisted therapy programming for Veterans at no charge, these special needs horses are the ones in need here. The costs to sustain them during their rehabilitation is not covered by other grants, yet represent a tremendous
growth and training opportunity for the Combat Veterans who are working with them. The goal? To help get these horses to the point that they may be adopted and live safe, happy and productive lives.
