Headphones for Auditory Sensitivity

Donation protected
Many children live with sensory sensitivities, which can be extremely difficult in our sensory heavy world. Children with sensory sensitivities (SSs) may be extra sensitive to tactile senses, auditory stimulation, light and dark visually, and olfactory senses, or any combination of these. The most common of these SSs is auditory, so that loud noises can be particularly overwhelming or even painful to these children. SSs are most commonly linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and most of the research on SSs is in relation to ASD. The research shows that by creating sensory sensitive environments, children can experience less anxiety, less pain, and less sensory difficulties.

I am working to bring noise-cancelling headphones into certain branches of the Camden County Library System, starting with Voorhees library. The headphones are sold for between $4-$10, are made for children with auditory sensitivities, and are wireless so that they can only be used for noise cancellation. The headphones will be available for use within the library for all children that need them.

As someone who grew up libraries, I can attest that the learning opportunities a library can provide are unbelievable, and it is a right that all children should have. I believe that incorporating even a few pairs of headphones can make the library more accessible for children on the spectrum or with SSs will make a huge difference in the lives of children with auditory sensitivies. Every dollar truly does help!

Thank you so much for checking this page out and for any and all donations!
