Early in October 2014, my sister Jessica Lynn Socol found out she had Uterine Cancer. She was suffering from extreme pain and discomfort which led her to get examined. The results were grim, but there was a hope that she could fight it and there would be a chance of beating it. On the night of October 29th she woke up with major difficulty breathing. Believing this was more than the typical Asthma attack, she was admitted to Staten Island University Hospital.
After several days of testing and receiving Oxygen, it was determined that Jessica's uterine cancer was widely metastasized through out her body, primarily in her lungs. more than 80% of her lung tissue was found to be covered in tumors. Her ability to process oxygen on her own diminished rapidly. She would need to be intubated and placed on a respirator to keep her alive.
She was heavily sedated and made very comfortable, she had no pain and no fear.
At that time the only hope for treatment was to try a round of chemotherapy. The hope was that the chemo would shrink her lung tumors enough to address the rest of the cancers in her body.
Unfortunately, the battle took a turn for the worse when she began to run a fever that reached an unbelievable high of 108.3. This high fever stayed with her for many hours, but like a champ, she fought it. The fever finally broke and she was down to a manageable temperature of about 102.
It is unknown if she suffered major brain damage from the fever. It was not long before her Kidneys began to fail. There would not be any options for treating her kidney failure due to so many other complications. Her time was nearing an end... Jessica finally passed away painlessly and without suffering on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 1:20pm...
Before Jessica lost the ability to speak she asked me to be her Health Care Proxy. I promised her that I would be with her every step of the way, and I would make sure she got the very best treatment. Jessica made it clear to me that she wanted to go down fighting this affliction to the bitter end. I honored her wishes and gave her every opportunity to fight... Unfortunately, by the time she had been diagnosed, she was already far to sick to beat the Cancer, but we tried.
In her 43 years on earth, Jessica lived a life that was full of Love, Friendships, Passions, and Happiness. She was not without her troubles though. Jessica was an aspiring Actress who lit up with excitement and brought all of her passions and energies to her roles. Jessica had a way of making even the smallest roles in a performance larger than life.
Jessica had a tremendous sense of humor and a contagious laugh that could leave a whole room in stitches. No matter what was going on in her daily life Jessica always had a sunny disposition and a positive attitude. However, if you treated her with disrespect, she had no problem letting you know.
Jessica lived a modest lifestyle. She worked several jobs and always struggled. She gave so much of herself in the community providing food and services to the needy through Project Hospitality where she worked full time. She always seemed to get knocked down right at the moment she picked herself up, and when she fell, she always fell hard.
When Jessica died she left behind a lot of heartbroken friends and loved ones. She also left behind a mountain of debt and very little resources to cover her final medical costs and funeral arrangements. She had some insurance, but like many people know, it is seldom enough to cover everything.
My mother and I have a lot of support from our loving family and close friends, who have banded together to give Jessica a dignified Peace. I have created this fund raiser for all of you who knew Jessica and wanted to send a donation to help with her expenses.
We understand that everyone is struggling, and we do not expect or demand anything from anyone. We simply ask that instead of sending flowers or a card, you take that money and donate it here. Every little bit counts and we are deeply grateful for anything that is given.
Jessica leaves behind a huge gap in the hearts of so many. However, I truly believe that she will remain as a living essence in the hearts and minds of those who she has left behind. Keep her alive in you fondest memories and remember her as she was in the fullest of Life, a warm and gentle being.
