Hayley and Tommy's House Adaption

Donation protected
On 1st September 2012 one of our closest friends, Hayley, was given some news that would change her life forever. Her only child Tommy, at the age of 6 was diagnosed with the muscle wasting disease Muscular Dystropy. His type Limb Girdle MD2E so rare  (only 1 other person known in the UK at time of diagnosis), his prognosis  uncertain, his future unknown. The only words that stayed with her in the weeks that followed is there is no cure.

We have so much admiration for how Hayley coped with this news. Understandably devastated, she got through her darkest days by throwing herself into fundraising. A single Mum to Tommy, she was determined to show him that with a positive mindset anything is possible and that there is always hope.

Hayley and Tommy raised £11,000 in 18 months for the charity Muscular Dystrophy UK, nothing was off limits, Tommy sitting in a freezing cold bath of beans or Hayley throwing herself out of a plane,  she was determind not only to help fund critical research to help Tommy, but also to help all families and children living with Muscular Dystrophy.

Helping others is at the heart and soul of Hayley, she was a fundraiser for an International Development charity for 14 years, dedicating herself to raising funds to help people living in desperate need around the world. However, as Tommy's condition deteriotes, she was forced to give up the job she loved in 2016 to dedicate her time to looking after Tommy. She has since created a blog (visit www.adaptingmum.co.uk),
wanting to help others who are going through a similar situation and share practical advice and emotional support, and works part time to fit around Tommy's needs.

Which leads us to the reason why we have created this page. In 2 weeks time Hayley's home will be full of workmen as crucial house adaptions take place to
ensure Tommy can keep his independence and his basic needs are fulfilled. Tommy is struggling, he often is forced to crawl up the stairs as the condition worsens, Hayley is there behind him helping him up. But Tommy is a growing 11 year old boy, and Hayley is a petite 5ft 3, so physically this will soon be impossible.

Hayley is giving up her bedroom to make way for a new bedroom/wet room for Tommy, half her living room will be taken up by a wheelchair accessible lift, all doors widened to fit a wheelchair. Not a room in the house will be left untouched.

The council is funding these essentail adaptions to Hayley's home, but they only go so far. They will not cover the expense of redecorating, new carpets which will be needed throughout the whole house, new furniture to fit in the now smaller rooms.

Hayley and Tommy have already been through so much, and still have such a huge fight ahead of them. Hayley would never ask for help for herself, but she really deserves a home which is not only functional, but is also comfortable, welcoming, and most importantly still feels like a home for the both.

Please, if you would like to support Tommy and Hayley to help make their lives a little bit easier and give them a home they deserve, donate what you can today.

Thank you,
