Hawkesbury for Marriage Equality
Donation protected
It’s OK to vote No, but Not OK to steal signs supporting the YES position.
On 29th August 2017 Hawkesbury City Council voted to support Same Sex Marriage and with the help of a public donation hung a sign from Council Chambers communicating its stance and encouraging a YES vote. The erection of the sign brought almost 100 supporters out to applaud and celebrate the erection of the sign and the raising of the rainbow flag on the flagpole at Chambers.
On 17 September, in the dead of the night, someone cut the sign down and stole it. It has been reported to police and Councillors and the community are very disappointed by this act of vandalism and denial of free speech.
The Hawkesbury region is home to many LGBTQI people and the current council strongly advocates for equality and inclusiveness and is extremely concerned about the effect this act of vandalism and hate will have on its LGBTQI community.
We ( Members of the Hawkesbury Community )are seeking to raise funds to replace the sign. If possible, we would like to create a much larger sign which will be far more difficult and unwieldy for vandals to steal unobserved.
We are looking for $1000 in donations to reprint and rehang the sign.
