Hats with a Mission - A Micro Preemie Gives Back

$1,350 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 14 people in 1 month
Hi! My name is Sarina and I am seeking your help to raise money for materials to knit for our tiniest and most vulnerable babies - micro-preemie babies.

As a micro-preemie myself, I had a very difficult start in life. I was born four months too soon in August of 1990 and weight one pound and fifteen ounces or 881g.  Like all micro-preemies, my lungs had not developed yet, so I had many complications.

I had to stay in the hospital for six months before I could go home. My resulting challenges which I call "hiccups" prevent me from living alone,  but I don’t let them define me.

One of my favorite pictures has always been of myself in the incubator wearing a tiny hat my mom had knit for me.

When I learned how many preemies are born to disadvantaged families,  who go home without a hat to keep them warm, I wanted to give back. My love for knitting gave me the idea and Hats with a Mission was born.

By my 29th Birthday in August of this year, I will hand-deliver 40+ hats to the Neonatal ICU (NICU) in Cincinnati, OH, where I was born. The nurses and doctors there saved my life. I’d love to deliver a smile to their faces and to the parents receiving my hats for their tiny preemie.

Last month’s our local knitting store in Santa Rosa, Cast Away Yarn Shop hosted a charity knitting event for me. It was a huge success. I already have 25 hats ready to be delivered.

Hats with a Mission has grown beyond my wildest dreams!

The hospital in my parent's hometown in Germany has requested hats!  While on vacation in Speyer we have hosted two charity knitting events and I will deliver 22 tiny hats to the local NICU.

We reached out to senior homes and will deliver wool and needles so they can be part of our growing community.

Can you imagine seniors knitting for preemies?

Girls Scouts have contacted us and want to help. We're teaching them how to knit or crochet hats for us.

I want to inspire others to join me in helping as many tiny babies as possible worldwide  to receive a quality hand-made hat, knitted with love,  to keep them warm and get them started on their road to success

I want to show the world what's possible if we focus on the strength and not the weakness and help each other.

Your support will pay for yarn, needles and shipping expenses to Neonatal ICUs who can gift the hats to our tiniest friends.

HELP ME REACH MY GOAL OF 100 hand-knitted hats to be delivered to preemies around the globe.  Using the highest quality organic fibers, each hat cost $30 including shipping to its new home.

You can help to keep the tiniest babies warm by donating, ordering hats from us, or even knitting or crocheting hats to send us! Email us for the pattern.

Thank you very much for your consideration and for helping me help my preemie brothers and sisters.
You can also invite your friends to help me reach my goal.

PS: I started knitting hats for myself and my family in 2016, and soon, people wanted to buy them. I was thrilled. The income allowed me to purchase taxi rides to town. I'm not able to drive, but my goal is to be as independent as possible.

My love for knitting helps me now to help others.

We're super excited and happy!

Sarina and "Hats with a Mission" was featured in Santa Rosa's Bennett Valley Hills Living Magazine. See picture below.

Upon our return to the U.S, our local yarn shop Cast Away had received 11 beautiful hats in the mail for us. How amazing is this?

We have shipped out our high-quality cotton yarn to people who wanted to knit but couldn't afford to buy yarn.

We ship wool and return mail anywhere in the U.S.!

Please share this info with your folks.

We're creating community. Together we're stronger!

Over 100 tiny hats have been knitted or crochet between our charity knitting events in Santa Rosa and Germany. And many more are on the needles!

46 hats have been donated to the NICU in Speyer Germany! The smiles were lightening up the room, both from the parents and doctors and nurses.

These little hats spread joy and hope in the middle of the challenging path parents of just born preemies find themselves on.

We'll keep knitting. Besides Sarina's big event in August, to gift her hats to the NICU in Cincinnati where she was born we will be shipping hats to NICU's worldwide.

If you have a connection to a NICU, please reach out to us. We're here to help and are looking for interested hospitals.

Thank you so much for your support so far. Please keep spreading Hats with a Mission with your friends.

With gratitude,
Sarina and her mom

"Hats with a Mission" turns heads in Germany!

While on our visit to Germany, we organized four charity knitting events. The tiny hats took over our hometown Speyer overnight. On Friday we had 60 hats ready to go.

Sarina had her first official appearance and donated 46 of the cozy hats to our local NICU. It landed her several interviews and the front page of every local newspaper!

KNITTED LOVE is needed and wanted and celebrated!!!

Can you imagine how proud Sarina is? Her face keeps lightening up: "I finally feel useful!"

Orders are coming in from hospitals, and our knitting fans are on the needles! We're growing faster than I ever imagined.

Now we are preparing for Sarina's first Mission in the U.S. 40 hats are waiting there to be gifted to the NICU in Cincinnati where Sarina was born almost 29 years ago.

Thank you so much for your support. Sarina's Universe has grown, her village expanded.

Together we can go far!

Manuela and Sarina
